Absolutely over the moon! Joined my first club at the end of April, having played the occasional round with some guys from work and becoming obsessed. It was my birthday on 7th July so I set that as a target to try and break 100.

I've been floating between 102-108 shots per round for the last month or so and couldn't seem to get any lower - my target wasn't looking good. Then had a game on Friday after an early finish, but wasn't looking forward to it as I had a huge blister on my right hand.

Then low and behold I shot 97, with 44 stableford points playing off 26. I expected to feel some relief and joy but I was literally jumping around and beaming like the Cheshire Cat.

My pal that I play with said that the big difference he saw in me was my course management was much better than previous rounds, plus my short game had improved massively. I also recorded 34 putts which I was really happy with.

If you made it this far, thanks!

44 stableford points playing of 26 with a gross of 97?

What's the par for the course? 72? That would suggest to me a few pars (or even birdies) and then a few big scores - plenty of potential to get right down to the 90 mark or below if you keep up with the course management!

Good work!

Haha, I'm not overly familiar with how points are worked out but that was strange*that you worked out how my round was played.

Here is a link to view my scorecard, if you can read anything in to this it would be appreciated.

your putting looks pretty good given you only had two 3-putts and a couple of one putts.
Your scoring was also pretty consistent without any triple bogies.
I'd say you have the game to get below 90 if you can work out where you lose your shots.

Keep it up GPS, cracking start to great things.

Just realised you had three triples... Read it way too quickly.
Great achievement none the less.

Thats good putting stats..
If I could improve mine to that level I would be mid 80,s...
I average 38/40 puts in a gross 90/91:ooo:

I always thought I was OK at putting, might need to work on that....

Without sounding like I know what I'm talking about, my playing partner has said I have a natural ability to 'feel' my putts, plus it's helping that I'm getting within around 8feet of the pin most of the time with my approach shots

Thanks for the kind words chaps!

Putting stats are an interesting one and don’t really tell the whole story in my opinion.

I might take fewer putts than you on average, but then that’s probably because I miss more greens with my approach shots and then chip closer.

I would say for me at least, the best metric is shots taken from 150 yards and in, and how that is then split between approach shots / chips /putts. That will quickly identify the problem area.

I don’t do this currently, but maybe I should start……

Difficult to read too much into it really, just keep working on consistency via course management and keeping the big scores as few and far between as possible.

If you identify that their cause is bashing one out of bounds with your driver, then where there is danger off the tee hit an iron or a hybrid instead etc. Keeping the ball in play all the way round is a good starting point.

Search for the much publicised (it's probably published and patente by now....) 3 goals method on here, it would be a useful tool to give your approach a bit of structure if you think that is needed!

Well done on breaking the magical 100

I picked up the game about 18 months ago and am completely hooked

Only play once a fortnight, although lately I have been playing once a week and sometimes twice a week. Not a member of a club as I would not get value for money, so just play as many different courses as I can through various deals and 2-4-1 offers

First time I played I shot 120 and it took me a good few months before I managed to break 100. I am normally a calm player and don't show my emotions much, even after nailing a birdie or duffing a shot 10 yards into the rough

However when I holed the putt to score a 99 I was beaming like a cheshire cat too, was well made up with myself

Vowed there and then to never ever go above 100 again, and although I have done on one or two occasions I am now shooting low 90s (90, 91, 92) and have been in the 80s (84, 87, 88, 89) on numerous occasions

Next aim is to consistently break 90 and start looking at low 80s

I believe this is possible as I drive the ball well and hardly ever 3 putt (touches wood this continues) and I have slowed my game down and now have far better course management. Take you punishment and get a bogey rather than trying to recover a poor shot or position and end up with a 7 or worse

Hope you now start to break 100 regularly, you will have ups and downs but like me if you persist at your game you will soon start to see your game (and scores) improve

Good luck, let us all know how you get on

Thanks everyone for the advice so far. I can pinpoint where I get myself in to trouble and 9/10 times it comes down to concentration. There are so many different things to think about during your set up and swing etc that the basics like not looking up are forgotten about for me. If I could sort that it would shave a few shots off straight away!

Another thing that doesn't help is the rough at my course is brutal and costs me a few shots too. Although it's not usually from the tee, which is even more frustrating!

My first ever round of golf i shoot 97.. i thought it was poor never even knew breaking 100 was an achievement

What a pointless post. Fair play if that is true, you obviously have a great natural talent. Sadly I don't and have had to work hard to break 100.

Ill take a little solace in the fact that judging by your signature you've managed to shave approx 8 shots off your gross from when you started. I've managed to get from approx 125 down to 97 in a shorter space of time.

Well played GPS breaking 100 is a good milestone to crack, gives you a good boost and once you break it most find its easier to get below 100.

I would agree with most on here that course management is probebly the quickest way to improve your scores,do this and Iam sure you won't be long before you're shooting low 90s regularly .

No matter what level we play at we should all be happy with our achievements. Unless you are setting yourself goals that are ridiculously easy to achieve that is.

Congrats at breaking 100, now focus on breaking 90.
My strongest recommendation for doing so is to massively improve your short game - work on pitching, chipping and putting (although it sounds like your putting is good anyway). If you have confidence of rescuing your hole when you miss the green or can't get there in 2 it will really help you to make more pars and contain your worst holes to bogies.

Congratulations again and good luck taking another 10 shots off per round.
