Films

Been to the cinema to see;
Anatomy of a Fall. Interesting, intriguing (did she do it or didn't she) and some good performances. But probably could have done with being a bit shorter.
And
Dream Scenario. Nothing wrong per se, but came away rather mystified as to what it was actually about. OK, I know the basic premise, but it was obviously (??) a commentary on something which escapes me.

Next week it's the Joaquin Phoenix depiction of Napoleon which should be a bit more straightforward.

Indiana Jones latest, it was ok but it had the feeling that it was just “Indy by numbers” Nazis, mysterious artefact, fancy locations and a bit of mysticism. All been done before.

Thought Harrison Ford was good but found Phoebe Waller-Bridge annoying.

I'd go further and say painful and unlikeable. Strange character.

They really should have put the series to bed after the third but money talks 🤷‍♂️. It was better than the Crystal Skull but please, no more.

Watched the Equaliser 1 & 2 the last 2 nights, really enjoyed them, Denzil Washington is a cracking actor though!!
Looking forward to the 3rd tonight!!

The marvels - formulaic stuff but still entertaining and fun.

Don’t understand why Brie Larsen gets stick - I think she’s great as carol d.

Been a while since I went to cinema and amazed how expensive it’s become.

Enjoyed it myself. People seen to forget films are just mindless escapism and expect perfect

We are lucky here we have the cheap cinema (£4) and Vue do value seats for £4.99 so I went Vue to see it for £5

The less said about how much I paid for the nachos tho 😆

Another vote for Vue, see if there is one near to you. £4.99 at ours, prices do go up by a £1 for better seating up to VIP seats, not worth it. Plenty at the lowest price though. If you go with someone, buy cheap travel insurance, or whatever, through compare the market and then you get 2 for 1 at Vue on Tuesdays and wednesdays.

We take in our own sweets and even our own coffees in a travel mug so all costs are controlled.

I'm not going to see The Marvels, since Endgame Marvel have dropped off a cliff and I've decided to bale out. In terms of Brie Larsen, I don't really know her as an actress but I think the Capt Marvel character is really bland. No idea if that is the actress or the character 🤷‍♂️. Marvel have some cracking female characters, Black Widow, her sister Yelena (my absolute favourite), Valkyrie, Marvel just misses the mark for me.

I think Carol Danvers is a good character but Captain Marvel possibly too overpowered to be interesting - there's no real jeapardy for her. Basically superman without kryptonite. Personally
I'm mostly looking forward to what happens when the X-Men are introduced and she encounters Rogue!
I hope to see that play out on screen!

Agree MCU movies/series are dropping off. I'm not a fan of the whole "multiverse" stuff and especially not when they just seem to be using it to pull in actors from the (generally poor) Fox and Sony movies. They are really going to drop the ball on the X-Men if they don't recast them - lots of great characters and storylines were totally wasted by Fox.

Still some decent stuff - I liked Loki and did enjoy the Marvels. Quantummania was the low point for me. I love this stuff though so not giving up on it yet.

I get what you mean re captain marvel , I mean in end game she shows up and almost wins the entire battle on her own.. they had to write that she was "off world" to stop her just coming in and saving the day

Much like how the Nolanverse batman has no superman otherwise "yes there is a bomb.. oh wait superman has removed the bomb, stand down"

Old Dads, some funny moments but seemed a bit like trying to make a film around a 20 minute stand up routine and I am not sure any of the characters had any likable qualities to get across the message from either side of the debate.
I watched it Thursday night, found it very relatable. Enjoyed it too, made me laugh more in the opening half hour, agree with GB72.

Yeah, I've always felt they should be more careful who they pick and choose to be in it. I felt a little bit that way after Age of Ultron when they created Vision and he kind of obliterated all the enemies - they had to write a way for him to not be able to do that again in the next film. 😆 Not that they're supposed to be believable, but if a character is too powerful and they have to come up with some arbitrary reason why they couldn't just do all the work, it kills even the in-world believability a little bit. It makes more sense when the villain is all-powerful, because they can sort of team up with 10 or 20 heroes to defeat them, but an all-powerful hero doesn't work at all.

That is very much the point, you have more powerful heroes, you need more powerful villains and so you get this ridiculous level of growth as each side are written to be more and more powerful.

The biggest successes for marvel have been the more 'normal' characters that have a degree of grounding and that it what they are losing.

They also never explain away why we have a planet full of heroes but you end up with maybe just one dealing with a world threatening situation.
