Filling the gap

Learn to use a 52 for every wedge shot in the book and you will ask yourself "why am I carrying so many wedges".

I am of an age where a 51/52 was the standard PW in a set so anything with a lot less loft I do not think of as a wedge.
I'm not of that age but I've also never really thought of the PW as a wedge, even though it's in the name. Feels like more like a 10 iron, particularly as all my pitching wedges have been part of the iron set anyway.

One of my sets has a 10 iron (and whilst it's nearly 40 years old it certainly isn't anywhere near 52°!)

Personally I moved to a separate wedge set up a long time ago and have always accepted that I will have a variable gap between the natural shot with my most lofted set iron and my lowest lofted wedge.
This is the trade of for living so long with that wedge that I don't have any practical gaps below that! Even if that gap was 20 yds (which it has been) it's no real issue, you just have to build competence and confidence in how to work the 9 and PW in a manner that repetitively fills that particular gap.

Yeah, I'm basically in the same boat. I made a topic about it at the start of this year and following some people's advice, I ended up just sticking with a 50 & 56. I prefer not to have a whole bunch of wedges as it will probably just produce more indecision in my mind. Now if I have say, 110 yards I just grip an inch or two down the PW and go for a sort of 90% swing, and similarly with the 50 when I have 85-90 ish yards. Once you get used to doing that you don't feel like you need 4 or 5 wedges to get by.

Yep; you basically need 2 swings (same mechanics but gripped down) and to know what they produce as well as you know what the normal one does.

After that you can develop the more refined and specialist shots with all of them .... before you know it you have 6 yardage per club and everything covered!

I had the same make and model of PW (52) in bag for years I went through two of them in that time despite the fact that they were cast clubs, that set came with 10 wedge. It was during that time that particular wedge was the only one I carried it was so versatile. Still got it and often wonder if it should go back in the bag but we have changed the type of sand in our bunkers.

I'd be making room. The bottom end of the bag is where you make the score and I'd perhaps drop the 4 iron to start with, and on other days maybe a different club depending on the conditions and the course I'm playing. I definitely think the gapping is too big. I'd also try to learn to play those finesse shots with everything from the 9 iron down. Not easy as I've proved to myself but if you can do it then you'll have the right tools and an armoury of different shots
