Father in Law passed away last night

91 years old, saw active service in submarines towards the end of WW2. Joined his local club when he got home after the war, and was the longest standing member with over 70 years continuous membership (the club gives free membership to anyone who has been there for more than 60 years).

He played into his 80s, never saw him play but he must have been decent, he's got two certificates for shooting under his age in comps when in his 70s.

A really nice guy who was lucky enough to die peacefully in his own bed. RIP Len.

My wife's granddad was a Submariner in WW2.... they are a close knit bunch. Let them know he's gone,

As you say, lucky enough to die in his own bed. Father-in-laws are interesting relationships.... mine was always really great, lost him too early.

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in
And the deeds that he had done.
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, everyone.


For when countries are in conflict,
Then we find the Sailor's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles,
That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor,
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage,
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline,
In the paper that might say:

"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SAILOR DIED TODAY"

Sorry to hear of your loss.
My grandad passed away last year and served in the Navy in Ww2, he was very proud of his military service. The family got in touch with the British Legion for his funeral and they attended the funeral, played the last post and what not.
Just a thought in case you wanted anything military related at the funeral.
