Fascinating things

When down in the Falklands the survey ship used to dock when on the way down and the back up

Certainly seems like one heck of a job

Some of the wildlife down there is brilliant

Very surreal to be walking along the beach being followed by penguins
During a Falklands trip in 91/92, we spent the week before Christmas visiting South Georgia. Not quite Antarctica, but one of the best places I ever visited during my navy years. Ironically the abandoned whaling station at Grytviken was overrun with elephant seals. The females were inside some of the buildings. 🦭

Elephant seals 😲

My god they can move when they want , we went to seal lion island for our 3 day R&R and the beaches are covered in them - can’t get too close as they are lethal

The males are massive. Scares the 💩 out of you when they “pop up” from the ground as you walk past them. Dive bombed by skuas too if they think you are getting too close to their nesting areas.

What do you mean by landfall ?

And how many years back are you looking at Durham being north of the Scottish Border
Err Landfall mainland of another country
To really mess your head Edinburgh is further west than Bristol
Southernmost tip of the Mull of Galloway is only a few miles from the Isle of Man. I believe the Isle of man is nearer to the Southern point of the Mull of Galloway than Stranrear [approx 20 miles]

Holland is closer and around 100 miles from Yarmouth

Aware of Edinburgh being further west

And so you meant Durham sits North of some parts of the Scottish Border

Yes, exactly this. This was doing the rounds on FB a few weeks ago. Look at the west coast of Scotland and see how low it hooks down. I remember someone saying that a straight line across goes to around Shildon in Co Durham.

It's a quirky, but fun fact

We're all familiar with the geography of our planet...

...but the Mercator Projection has totally skewed our perspective.
Greenland is not the same size as Africa. It would actually fit inside Africa 14 times.
And Africa is almost twice the size of Russia.

Way back in the mists of time, in a galaxy far far away, I did physical geography to A-level. We spent weeks on different projections. There was one that was excellent at showing continents but you had to show each one separately side by side. My mind’s fogged, old age, but I seem to remember it was called the (something) trimetric projection.

As you say, Africa is absolutely huge.

I like the one that's like a dozen slices of a globe.
