It is amazing how many brainless phrases became lingua franca of golf coaching before there was any understanding of the mechanics of what was going on, until about 20 years ago.

That was a John Jacobs one I believe, and it suckered me for decades as I tried to adhere to it, when what I needed to do was really commit to giving the ball a good skelp…instead I have tried to manipulate my swing to hit it better…and I’ve mostly failed.

You don’t hit the ball further by hitting it harder; you hit it further by hitting it better.

Probably more hitting it faster.
In the late 1960 I used to coach a former amateur boxing heavyweight champ and Scotland rugby No 8.
He used to hit the ball really hard but 5' 10''~ 9 stone me could outdrive him by 30+ yards.
It took ages to sort out his five knuckle grip

Indeed, that's what I was going to say. Striking it better definitely helps - but more distance comes from more speed.
