Faldos last Open

He struggled to play it a few years ago in his first Seniors Open so what the .... makes him think he can peg it up with the real Pro's this time......Doh.......

Maybe he is using it as a platform to relaunch his silly woolly jumpers again:rofl:

Maybe he's just showing how important winning The Open has been to him and this is just a wistful cast back in time to when he was the best golfer in the world. And we are all allowed wistful daydreams and memories - and he is fortunate enough to be able to play out his dreams and memories. Good luck to him and really hope he isn't too disappointed in how he plays - because it likely isn't going to be very great - but who knows...

I'm not sure how he is "taking the place" of someone who may or may not play well if they were given the place instead.

Surely someone who has failed to qualify for the event doesn't deserve a place more than someone who has won the championship 3 times, including twice over the course it's been played at this week?

Indeed.
+1

Really cant understand why some people on here dont want to see Faldo in the field this week. The guy is a legend and if he wants to play and its he's last Open for me it will be a treat to watch him play. Why do people knock golfs legends, the guys who gave the game its history and not want to see them out there  madness!

I can't understand it either, He'll struggle to make the cut but so will Curtis, Hamilton and Duval. they've earned their place this week so why not Faldo. Should we also do away with all exemptions just because they're likely to be chopping their way round.

Watch him play, are you going to The Open ?

I don't think he will get much TV coverage, you might see him in the background when they are showing Tom Watson hitting shots:whoo:

Cant see the BBC missing out on not showing Faldo as it looks like it could be he's last Open.......

Herself positively swoons over the man...
Don't know what she see's in him myself...
Think he has earned his right to one last hurrah...

More to the point I hope this is Muirfields last crack on the rota... Doesn't come across as being particularly welcoming of the event so can't quite work out why it has bothered hosting it...

As I said above, I am a big Faldo fan, I used to love watching him play and had the pleasure of meeting him a few times when my Grandad worked for him.

However, I don't think he should be playing. He has clearly moved on from playing golf, has hardly played in 3 years let alone competitively and his aim is to see how close he can get to not missing the cut. I'll go as far as saying that if he wasn't playing with Watson & Couples, there would be next to no-one watching him at all.

I hope he doesn't embarrass himself and I'm sure he'll get a good ovation when he gets to the 18th green, which he fully deserves, but as a competitor or someone I'd choose to watch it's not for me.

Nick Faldo is arguably the greatest British golfer in history. Only Harry Vardon won more majors. So if he wants to bow out at the open venue that means the most to him, whats the problem?
How many on here begrudged Jack doing the same at St. Andrews ?
The Open is our major, and if our greatest living exponent of the game wants to sign off at his favourite venue good luck to him.
I for one, only wish i could be there to witness it.

Good post, I don't see any reason why he shouldn't take up his place, he's earned it. Just because he's a Marmite character, people tend to forget how much he has done to help get youngsters involved in the game.

The point is that tbese guys are still playing events.
Faldo hasn't for 3 years.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Is it 3 years since he last played competitively,I thought it was a while but I didn't know it was that long.

Regardless of how long since he last played though I'd still like to see him there. For me the Open isn't just a golf Tournament, its a spectacle, a show. Not dissimilar to the Masters where we revel in the history of it all, Faldo is part of that, so for me him being there just adds to the week. I don't think Craig Stadler or Ben Crenshaw will ever win another Masters But I don't begrudge them being there.

If he's just using this week to 'say goodbye' to the Open as Nicklaus did at St Andrews that's fine by me.

Cant agree with that, its the best course on the rota (IMO), yes the HCEG have their own style and way of doing things but its THEIR club, the R&A ask them to give the course over to them to host the event. The gents only membership rule is a non issue as far as I am concerned, great for the reporters to try and get a story, oh, and alec salmon or whatever his name is to get himself on the tv to say how terrible it is.

Not very good for the game though. Promotes the idea of golf being played by a load of old codgers (and white, male, upper class ones at that). Think it sends out the wrong message.

So should Tom be out there as well? Lehman, Duval, Hamilton, Daly I suppose these out of form former players who were past champions shouldnt be there either  never heard so much rubbish.Ive read Faldos biog and he comes over as a very selfish guy but you cant deny he's golfing credentials.

Tom Watson has proved he can still compete which is more than can be said for the "Jumper"

Daly is not playing this year.

Faldo would be better standing still and saying nothing while modeling Pringle's new jumpers at their stand.
