What is the difference between them all. Or are they the same just under a different name?

I am looking to pick up a '3 wood' of some sort. Somethin a bit short of a driver than i can also use out of the rough, off the fairway of the tee etc?

Come on chaps, educate me!

rescue woods / hybrids are the same thing I think.

Fairway woods are a full profiled wood which is designed for use off the fairway, hense the name, or off a tee peg.

A hyrbrid/resuce however has a lower profile to make them more playable from tight lies and the rough.

A Fairway wood is your "standard" 3/5 or 7 wood.

Rescue wood and hybrid is the same club, it can be called by either name. they are replacements for your longer irons, shorter shafts than the fairways, easier to hit than the long irons.

If you are buying one, I would recommend the TM Burner Rescue, expensive at the moment, but very worth it!

yeah my dad in law has it, used it a few times, aint thought much of it but then again aint really had chance to get it going.

So am i better going for a rescue wood over a typical fairway wood?

Have a cleveland halo that one of our good members sorted out for me but has a stiff shaft. Easy to get airborn but not always straight.

Depends, I carry both in my bag. Have 3 and 5 woods and a 4i hybrid as my irons only go from 5-PW. Just bought a Burner 3 wood on recommendation from this site and it had its first full 18 today. Very good off the fairway (which is what I bought it for) but not that easy to hit off the tee. Tend to revert to my 5 wood for that.

If you already have a 19* hybrid, I would opt for a traditional 3 wood as it would give you a different option off the tee and provide a long option off the fairway. If you do drive into the rough on a long par 5 for example you can then use your rescue to recover and take your penalty for a wayaward drive in the form of distance. There isn't really any need to get a rescue style 3 wood, and I'm not sure you can actually buy them...you can get them down to a 1 iron but I think that has a higher loft than a standrad 3 wood.

Cut short I'd stick to a standard number 3 fairway wood.

Yeah but as i said i am looking to replace the halo as it has a stiff shaft! So literally will only have a driver and a 4 iron, nothin in between

With that in mind I would suggest a 3 wood and then wither a 3i hybrid or a 5 wood depending on what you feel more comfortable with. The 3i hybrid would probably be more flexible as to the situations that you can use it in.

I carry driver, 3 & 5 wood and 3 and 4 iron hybrids (Adams AS02). The hybrids are to replace the long irons as they have a small head like a 5 wood, but shorter shaft length than a wood to make them more playable from lots of places (hence utility).

The 5 wood is a bit redundant at present, but everything else gets used.

TonyN.

Had the same gap in my bag for a while. Tried some cheap fairway woods, for those long 2nd shots on par 5s, and got nowhere. Tried some CLKs and they certainly worked on the long par 3s, but still can't hit them on long faieway shots (don't think I'm sweeping down enough or something. In the end opted for a 17 deg CLK as being mid-ish point in the gap. However really struggled to get the ball off the ground. so went and got a 20deg, It works brilliantly off the tee, and a little better off the fairway, but I think it has more to do with my bad technique!

Try the Cobra baffler DWS 4 TonyN great club off the tee on long par 3's, fairway from about 200yards out and in the rough.

Very versatile and very easy to hit off the deck comapred to a 3 wood for not much loss in distance

Personally I love it, don't use a driver as too wild but two good strikes on a par 4 (around 400 yards) and it's either on or near the green.
At address it just looks like it wants to be hit there seems to be so much more loft than a 4 iron so your confidence naturally goes up.
Have a look at the Burner as well another good option but was just beaten by the Cobra for me.

Have to say I have a 20 degree baffler (3 hybrid) and it is in my opinion by far the best on the market. When I bought i last year Ispend over an hour trying at least 10 makes from budget brands like MD through to Mizuno and Taylormade which were the most expensive.

It was the only one I could control and gave me a high flight. Some of the others I couldn't hit straight and the callaway one I couldn't even get airborne. They were all regular flex shafts.

I know that Todays Golfer (the dark side) rated it as the best on test. My advice would be go out and give it a hit
