after the lack of rain for a couple of weeks our fairways are now rock hard and cut quite short -
is it just me or does anyone else prefer hitting their 2nd shot from the 1st cut or rough, I feel so much more confident with longer irons from 1st cut ?

i prefer my chips around the green to be sitting on the first cut. i find this easier than say 10 yards off the green on the fairway.

Fairway every time!

I much prefer to play approach shots and chips from the shorter grass type. A good fairway should not be too short or too long, not bare and not riddled with divots, just enough to lift the ball above the ground but not too long to get in the way of the contact.

Fairway for me, even with a long iron or fairway wood. Just feel more confident knowing how the ball is going to come off the clubface.

Well, most of the time anyway

Unless I am hitting a three wood, fairways for me all the time. Much more difficult to get any check from the first cut, and with the greens getting harder to hold, need all the help I can get.

Having watched the pros at Walton Heath on Monday, even they struggled to get near the pin when missing the fairway by a few inches.

Our first cut is looking like the second cut used to look.

lots of clumps of clover that can eat a ball or its standing up so much its easy to get right underneath one.

The rule is a simple one... Keep on the short stuff or risk losing your ball

Fragger

our rough was at its longest its been all year tonight. hope they clip it in the morning. wondering over to places i thought the ball would be easily found only to find it nestleing right down. can i change my answer to the OP?

I can see the OPs point, our fairways are very bare at the moment, I do prefera little grass under the ball especially when playing pitches or chips.

there's no easy answer to this one

generally it's easier to hit a shot from a slightly raised lie, unless against the grain, but harder to control it.

personally this means that for me I like a little grass for 4 iron and up, but hate it for 5 and below...a little green ring on the club face after the shot is not a ring of confidence!
