Club will be introducing fairway mats this winter whilst the fairways recover.

Having never used them , what do I need to know.

They are supplying mats but is it worth getting my own and which one ?

Spurk is perfectly good. But.....the cheapie fairway mats do the job just as well. You are on the fairway.....a £30 mat or a £7 mat just doesn't matter. Hit the ball first.....any mat will do.

How is an expensive mat better than a cheap mat? If you are on the fairway and use pretty well any club....you are supposed to hit the ball first and then the mat. So.....how will a mat help you if you have already hit the ball?

Have you ever considered that some golfers don't make perfect contact everytime.
Yep. Firmer mat like the spurk.....club might bounce off I guess with a fat hit and still get the ball. Cheapie mat that I use....hit it fat and the light weight mat just moves.....it's still a fat hit, but the difference is.....what?

I tried some cheap mats. They tend to go uneven, curl at the edges, not stay securely in place with the little grips like the Spurk. The fake grass is decent and the ball nestles on it nicely like it would on grass; cheap mats sometimes feel like hitting off worn carpet.
Hit the ground first (pretending that this wouldn’t happen now and then to most club golfers seems, er, optimistic) and it stays in place thanks to the underside spikes, so that’s much more like hitting off turf. It definitely felt easier to hit fairway woods off it than other mats. Maybe that is actually entirely psychological but then aren’t most things in golf?

Even the way it slots into its carry bag is nice.

Given that it’s a whole £20 dearer than cheap mats and you use it on (hopefully) the vast majority of holes every round then it’s also a far more cost effective performance and experience upgrade than pretty much any other new golf equipment.

Oh ...I get it. The Spurk just looks and feels like a better product. I use the cheapie mat.....but I don't even use the "grass" side of the mat. I turn it grass side down and use the smooth side of the mat. If I hit it fat....the club slides much easier into the ball than any fake grass part of a mat. Yes.....I am a fat hitter....

Just got the Spurk out of its box, where it spent the summer having been cleaned, dried and put away.

Looks brand new. Should last several years. I also resist the temptation to tred it down with a muddy shoe, and press it down woth my hand. That keeps it relatively clean.

Dreadful Scottish invention! Has no place as far south as Monmouthshire! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I take it the one to order is the short pile?
Do what my mate did. His daughter bought him one as a present, unfortunately it was the wrong one, a long one. Ever resourceful, he took a blade to it and trimmed half of it, half long, half short.

The best part of a long one is that the ball doesn't roll off it when it's on a severe slope so he had the best of both worlds.

Me? I'll stick to the short one.

You said all this last year when the subject of mats came up. You're consistent if nothing else ;)

However, do yourself a favour, spend a little cash and get a Splurk.

Yours sincerely.

Anthony A Splurk.
