fairway mat

we will have mats appearing in a big box by the first tee in the next few weeks i expect, despite the weather still being pretty good up here.

sort of green carpet on a black backing. We get them free and you just stick it back in the box when you have used it. Or you can drop to the side of the fairway. if Im inside 150 in the middle of the fairway i use the mat outside that drop to the side.

Would look to play somewhere else if was asked to play with mats

Parkland golf in Glasgow during winter? That means mats, but it also means a course in great nic throughout the rest of the year

Same here, although we have 2 courses so it's semi rough (no mats required) on 1 of the courses for the old stick in the muds who won't use mats to look after the course during the winter. The other course is mats only.

Last winter was the 1st year we've used them and this year is widely regarded by mny long time members as the best condition the course has been in for at least 10 years.

Am a bit surprised you need them at your place ?

We have the option of playing from the first cut or off a mat. This is the first time I have had to do this as a member of a club and I think it is a great way of protecting the fairways through the winter. It is not a hardship in any way shape or form - you either place the ball on an ideal lie at the edge of the fairway or play from a portable mat where your ball finished on the fairway.

There are no qualifiers being played so really it is just a question of having a friendly game, some fresh air and good company.

I don't really see why anyone should have an issue with it to be honest. It seems like an eminently sensible thing to do in the interests of the course, ensuring beautiful fairways in the competition season.

To say you would leave the club as a result seems somewhat over the top and borderline ridiculous to me.

Ive never had to use a fairway mat. I take it you must move to the side of the fairway if you are on a slope and you cannot get your ball to rest on a mat.

I quite like mats. Makes fat chips and pitches impossible and the overall benefit to the turf is pretty obvious in winter.

Understand why people get sniffy about them if paying lots of money to play somewhere but I'd rather play somewhere in the spring knowing that mats have been used in the winter for example.

just been introduced at Lee park this year gaz, you got out in time.;)

Tbf if there was ever a candidate course for this it would be lee park. Will see the benefits come the summer.

They probably got fed up with me hacking it up this last few years. good move really.

what i dont understand is why clubs insist you use them. we dont use them at our place and the fairways are fine. i understand grass doesn't grow too well in this weather but our greeny was saying that they simply pre germinate the seeds in warmer temperature before they fill the divots.
