We currently run a Roll up and we generally have 4 balls but every now and again we will end up with a mix of maybe 4 and 3 ball teams.

eg 4x4balls and 1x3ball

Format played is a betterball AMAM We play best 2 score 1st 6 holes, 3 best score next 6 hole and all 4 score final 6 holes.

Currently we take a wild card from the 3 ball and then check to see if that player improves the score on the 1st 6 and 2nd 6 holes so the scorecard will get adjusted accordingly and obviously the last 6 holes all the scores are added.

Is this the best solution or has anyone got any better ideas etc

Thanks Steve

Here's a method we use:

First 6 holes - best two.
Second 6 holes - best + second best times 2 (i.e. lose the worst)
Last 6 holes - best + second best times 2 + worst

We ask the group of 4 to also fill in individual cards. Then we draw one of those players before they tee off and enter their score into the 3 ball's card and pick best 2 from 4 for the team score... probably not explained very well...

Swindle at my old place does similar on a Saturday/Sunday morning, we play an individual and team team being 3 sixes in either 3s or 4s, if there was more than 1 threeball we would draw a player out of each fourball to not take part in the team event, if there was only 1 threeball then we draw cards from the fourballs to add to the 3.

But I like Rosecott's idea/method

some interesting and ingenious solutions to what's an impossible challenge; you're trying to balance potential in some way, and it really can't be done. In one sense it doesn't really matter what you do so you can just get on with it using which ever system every one agrees to be the most appropriate.
obviously 4x4 + 1x3 should/would be played as 5x3 but 7,10,11,13,14,17,19 etc are all a problem. It's slightly fairer to play 3's in these situations, scoring 2 scores, and 'sitting out' a players score in the 4 ball each hole in turn.
the other alternative is, when you have the above number, to simply move to a simpler scoring system where you just average all the players scores on the team - provides a different game profile.

whatever you do it should be pre-set against the numbers playing and obviously the way the teams get drawn also needs to have clarity!

The old boys at my place play in 3's or 4's with best 2 scores to count on each hole (stableford). The 3balls each have a virtual 'pro' who scores 2 points on every hole. Seems to work quite well as it's a fairly even split between 3's and 4's that win.

Hi There

Just to say many thanks for the different solutions /Ideas just goes to show we all have the same issues all over the country with a mix of 3 and 4 balls . We seem to have a serious debate about this at our club every time it happens so will present these various ideas next week.
So once again Thanks
Macca
