Got me thinking after seeing that great piece of kit in Justones post, is the explanar only suitable for 1 plane swings.
My understanding is that you roll the hand held bar against the outer swing plane that mirrors the swing arc. So as this mirrors a baseball type swing I can't see it working for a 2 plane swing, is that correct?

Does anyone still use the Explanar? The ones at my local range appear to be gathering cobwebs.

I cant see it working for any swing- wonder how Jim Furyk would use it:eek:

on a serious note it looks useful for the beginner or to ingrain the moveaway or few feet either side of the impact zone imo.

Apart from that I see them lying out the back of ranges or rusting in corners

It's actually more suited to a two plane swing but you can adapt it for a one plane swing by lowering the plane once you've set it in the normal way. Speak to me, I know all about it! Fascinating using one to compare the "feel v real"

The one at our range only ever gets used by the very new or very "helpful but helpless" types, never seen a lesson or good player use it

Many people understandably misunderstand this bit of kit, thinking it dictates a single plane. But it can't, all it does is constrain a locus of a single point, and because the shaft can slide longitudinally at any point on the radius, it is not even the locus of a single point!

That said, it is a very useful piece of kit, and it is very versatile and can be used to work on a wide variety of swings.
Again, luthor's original explanor had a golf shaft with the outer rubber layer rotating/sliding around the shaft - which was all about the player NOT rotating his/her forearms on the way back.

It is very good for stability of the backswing, and repeating the motion, and it is very good at keeping you stable at the end of your backswing, when we typically "fall off"
