So today I tried a super stroke grip fitted to a putter at our pro shop, I instantly felt right at home with it but as out shop has no stock for a week I was left needing a local source. Knowing a local shop (which will remain nameless) stocks these I popped down with my 2 month old vp1 to have the grip blown and the super stroke grip fitted on.

He trundles off wi my flat stick and 5 mins later returns with my freshly gripped flat stick, but no original grip! " have you got the original grip as well?" Was responded with " no I cut it off "

So now if the super stroke isn't all its cracked up to be I have no original grip to put back on. The pros response was basically that as I didn't ask for it he didn't see the point in turning the compressor on to blow it off when he could cut it quicker....

Is it just me that things this was a bit of a arsey attitude?

I would only expect someone to give me back a grip if I asked otherwise I would expect him to rip it off with a Stanley knife.

Even though it was clearly brand new... Or as close too?

I only ask as unless the grip was an old one every grip I've ever had changed they shops have always returned the good grip as a default setting

Yes.

At the end of the day you're greeting about what a tenner? Once you start draining putts from everywhere it'll be long forgotten.;)

In theory yes, but it would have been nice to have the old grip to go back to or even put back on should I wish to move upgrade or change the putter. After all 25.00 for grip isn't cheap.

Have to agree here. Unless you ask for it I would expect them to just cut it off.

me too - in fact when I got mine done last week, once we agreed the new grip to go on, the pro had the original TM grip sliced off before I could say anything!

Got to admit that unless specified you wanted the original grip back then I'd expect them to rip it off with a blade as default.

Inexperienced mind reader? Or frustrated that the desire to keep the old grip wasn't mentioned from the outset?

Every other grip that I have had replaced if the grip has been in decent nick they have always blown off and given me the old grip back, this has been from around 4 different pro shops, the fact that this was almost new I what have expected it as a given. If the pro had any doubt should he have not ask if I had wanted the grip?

THE ONLY grip that has never been given back to me was one that was shot to bits and split, but even they the shop I used for that change and the only change they have done said " I take it you won't be wanting this back?"

As they say assumptions is the mother of all cock up's , maybe I shouldn't have assumed that he knew I obviously wanted the new grip back, but likewise he shouldn't have assumed I didn't,,,,

I think that's a fair statement, but it does depend on what standard practice is and this can vary from one place to another. Your previous experience is that most places return the old grips in tact, but from the replies on here, it seems that a some people would expect them to be cut off.

I'm considering getting midsize grips on all my clubs, but my clubfitter will just cut the old ones of. The clubs are only a few months old and it seems a shame for the grips to go to waste. It might also be prudent to keep them if I ever sell the clubs so that I can offer an option on grip size.

I can understand the frustration especially as you have not known anything but personally Im another who wouldn't expect the grip back unless I asked for it specifically

If the old grip was in good condition I would expect the pro to ask whether or not I wanted it kept.
It's what I was taught as good retail practice ................ never assume anything, always ask the customer exactly what they want.

He wanted a grip replaced, that's what he got. No problem.

Worse than that, I put a brand new cally driver in to be re gripped. I supplied the grip, and was charged 9 for the refit. I didn't get the old grip back, and was charged the same price for the regripping as if I was buying the grip, and having it fitted. Robbed? You bet. Going back? No chance!
