There was a post earlier in the week, sure you all remember, re The Annual Golf Match and 8 people playing from the tee.

Someone suggested that the member involved should have confronted/talked to the Group of 8.

Not specifically referring to the Group involved how many of you would approach a Group of 8 unknown visitors and ask them what they were doing? Personally I think very few.

No, I probably wouldn't.

If it was on the last hole, I doubt I would get too het up about it really.

If it was on the first hole, I would ask to be let through at the earliest convenient opportunity.

I have trouble confronting people I know ever mind 8 strangers. Let's just hope this thread doesn't open the wounds of the past though ;)

I have on numerous occasions seen 6 balls in front of me on my course from visitors and every time one of them has come over to me an said when ever you catch us up we will move aside an let you through cant get any fairer than that if they want to take there time and play in large groups fine as long as there is no hold up to groups behind

No problem, had this recently on our course, I was on the 4th and they were all on the 7th green. Wandered over and had a chat with them and they were very receptive. Never be afraid to 'advise' someone on the course regarding etiquette and always treat them how you would like to be treated. If you go in all guns blazing then don't expect to be greeted with open arms, try the friendly way first with a smile on your face!

Glad to have helped!

Exactly, it's all about how you approach the matter - speaking to them rather than 'confronting'

Have played in a 10 ball before now. It was a daft skins game with the juniors. We stepped aside as soon as the group(s) behind got anywhere near. It was a huge laugh, and the members coming up behind were intrigued by it all. They were very appreciative of the courtesy the lads showed, and also to see them out there with a couple of adults showing them the ropes.

Proper communication achieves far more than foot stamping and screaming.

More than four and it is a sign of either ignorance or selfishness. I know this type of thing would not happen in my club and if it did it would be dealt with quickly. I guess this is the difference where you play in a members club and pay the premium so that you dont have to experience this type of annoying behaviour, as to a pay and play club where the owners profit line is the deciding factor.

Ignorance or selfishness? Is it high up there on your horse?

It certainly does. I have played in a 9 ball, playing skins. Good fun one evening. We would have let the 4 behind through, if we hadn't left them behind. Had a chat in the bar later, and they were amazed at the speed of play. That said, with 9 players, you can pick up pretty quickly if you are out of the hole, as you will need birdie or better to take any money.

Are you Gilbert in disguise?????

Nothing in our rules against having more than 4 people playing together socially. As long as they were keeping up with play in front I'd have no issue.

I have tee'd off our first hole in a 19 ball. It was an elimination match where we lost one person a hole. Took 7 and a half hours with one complaint. We finished 1 hour in front of him with no one in between. Think his name is Gilbert or something similar.

It almost saddens me when some start having a go at others for playing in a 6/7/8/9 ball. Yes, if they're holding everything up then shoot them but if they stand aside - or don't hold anyone up as in Murphs case - then where's the issue?
Nothing in the rules to say you can't have more than 4 in a group, it's just the accepted maximum for competition. After all, sometimes they have 5/6/7/8 ball playoffs in the Pro Tournaments...
I don't care how many are in front of me, what they're doing, or how well/badly they're playing as long as they don't hold me up and get out of the way when I/my group catches them.

I sit in this camp. The key here is how you behave when you are infringing on the other players on the course. If you're holding someone up and there is room to let them through, that should be a priority, regardless of whether you are in a comp, or whether the people playing through are male/ female/ junior/ single player/ 2 ball/ 3 or 4 ball.......just let them go, everyone will have a happier round.

Chris... As a moderato you should be setting the standard. Like one of your replies to me it appears one of you jobs is to insult people?

Before this descends into another slanging match can we keep this on topic please.
Socketrocket, for what its worth, I have seen 5&6 balls playing round the very elitest of courses. The mentality being 'I have paid my annual subs, I can play when and how I like'.
