Twice I have been out on a pay-and-play course in recent weeks as part of a 4 ball and there were endless 2 balls behind us

We then end up being caught and having to let 2 balls through all the time. Took us 5 hours to finish a round the other day, it was hell!

My question is this, do you always let the group behind you through if they are playing faster than you are, regardless of the circumstances?

Yes, and in this situation if you know there is going to be a stream of 2 balls following personally Id rather let all the 2 balls go first or alternatively split our 4 ball into 2 2 balls (unless its a 4 ball match obviously)

I thought you only had to let people though if there was somewhere for them to go - i.e. there was a gap between you and the game in frount.
that is normally the case but as a 2 ball tends to move a lot quicker than a 4 ball it is logical gaps will appear hence letting them through, plus as it was a pay and play it gives them chance to drink the cans of lager in between shots!!!!

Seems unanimous, so I won't argue, but it takes a lot of the enjoyment out of the round. Using some basic logic it seems a little unfair that the club is happy because they are making the most money that they can, the 2 balls are all happy because they can get let through like its the fast lane on the autobahn and the muppets in the 4 ball have to sit and watch the world go by.

2 of the other guys swore blindly that they would never let 2 balls go through like that again, their view was its the club's fault for booking the tee times their way. It would suck to be in the 2 ball behind the 4 ball, but it also sucks for the 4 ball.

Becuase all pay and play golfers don't know the rules and drink on the course.

Don't be a ****.....

the normal time between tee times ranges from 6-8 mins this is normally ample to clear the fairway, how would you feel if YOU were one of the 2 balls and had to wait on every shot because the 4 ball in front was taking forever!! no use getting annoyed just enjoy being on the course.

NO!!

If you are keeping up with the group in front you are NOT obliged to let 2 balls through. You only have to call people through if you are holding them up. Just because you are following a load of 2balls it doesn't necessarily mean you are playing any slower than them.

If you ARE holding them up then obviosly you should let them through but you are also entitled to get round so maybe let a group through every couple of holes.

you appear to be contradicting yourself -

it's quite common to be keeping up with the game in front but holding up the game behind.......which of your 2 statements do you support?

"

I was having a chat with the ranger of my old club (Woodbury Park) a couple of weeks ago at the driving range. He had exactly this problem out on the course, a fourball with loads of 2 balls behind. The fourball were letting the 2's through on a regular basis but by doing it so often it was causing problems further back. In the end he had to tell them not to let any more through, but to try and play a little quicker.

In busy times I would expect the two balls to pair up. In non busy times, I would expect to play them through. If this was a Saturday morning, then no, they should find some mates to play with. The course is losing two green fees for every group out. The starter should pair them up into fours.

2 seperate scenarios, which bit don't you understand?

And then everyone can spend five and a half hours on the course.

So for those proposing playing every two ball through, you arrive at a short par 3, and let the two behind through. Before they have putted out, the next two arrive, so you play them through too, otherwise you are holding them up. Then the next pair arrive. When do you get to play? Any time you try to get a shot away, you will be holding someone up.

What would be simpler would be if the guys behind paired up.
