eSports on the Beeb

In theory yes, in practice how much are we as a society losing the fun from it. I read a really interesting article recently about sport nowadays becoming more 'professionalized' at a younger and younger level. People are looking for elite sportspeople more and more, football at a young level is becoming less and less about having a kickabout and more about being scouted and spotted, same with lots of other sports.

The Olympic funding, indeed the finding of a lot of sports nowadays depends on them getting medals, which in turn leads to more pressure on kids to effectively be really good at it. There are whole industries built around identifying elite sports people from which is great for UK sport at an elite level, but I'm not sure how much it encourages young kids to persist who are not at that elite level
This, plus the pressure on parents to provide the right "named" kit for the relevant sport.

Kids can't possibly enjoy the sport without the best and latest kit.

Where was there anything I said in the post you quoted about golf, I quoted football as an example? Yes I think it has problems in attracting young people to the game but I was talking about many sports.

Golf bad, sport bad, education system bad, Brexit bad, Tories bad, old people bad.... young people persecuted. Is there anything good happening in the UK?

Totally agree this is part of it. I'm trying my best to get my boy exercising and playing outside instead of watching TV and tablet.

He is only two and I have to learn how to provide those things. I'm fighting both my own desire to plonk down in front of a PC and my desire not to be a lazy parent.

Some days I am the lazy parent, it's not bad occasionally (we call them pj days) but it's not the norm.

It's going to take a lot of effort on my part as he grows but I'm going to do my best to get him outside and feed him well.

I'm just so tired all the time and I only have one!

I've found it gets easier as he's get a bit older.
My lad is 9 so can go on decent bike rides,15m is his longest to date.
At 2 you have to do everything for them & cant take your eyes off them for a second.

In which yet another thread has been reduced to petty personal digs, most of which having nothing to do with the thread. Would be nice if someone could continue the discussion about how sport is becoming less fun but whatevs. Crack on.

Maybe you need to have a read of many of your posts in many threads. You rarely have anything positive to say, especially when it comes to the older generation.

I thought this thread was going to be about eSports not mindless bickering about age and why people should play sports.

Anyways on topic, I think its great that eSports is on the BBC, having played competitive CS:S, COD MW3 and WoW its great to get that exposure.

If people want to play sport they will, if people want to play games they will, im fortunate that I was encouraged to play sports as a young kid and loved it. My brother on the other hand wasnt encouraged and was left to chose his own path and literally cant be away from a laptop/tablet/xbox.

to the offtopic things that are going on, its the parents that need to encourage and introduce kids to sport in the right way. If not done in the right way it can totally put them off.

I played CS1.6 a lot at uni and was in teams, but nothing beyond the small website based leagues. I watched quite a bit of it online when there were big competitions, too. I'd still tune in for things like that.

I was in both Clanbase and ED leagues on CS:S, loved it but was never amazing at it.

I really enjoyed watching pro CS:GO, will look up more live streams of pro games after watching the stuff on BBC 3.

The rocket league stuff is crazy, I can barely hit the ball in that game.

Yea, EnemyDown is where I played as well as constant gathers on IRC.

we mainly just played GB stuff on CSS and MW3, nothing too heavy. Obviously played ranked 2v2 and 3v3 in WoW.

eSports. Not a problem for me.

My kids have a balance with consoles and outdoors. They play a lot of FIFA17 and the tactical and player information they pick up is amazing. They transfer this knowledge to watching and playing the actual game. They know who is playing a 4-5-1, 4-3-3, 4-2-4 and where players are supposed to be. They know most club badges, who plays in what team, what league, both in Premiership and La Liga. I could argue they know more about the game than most on here...

When they watching a real live game and start shouting things like X or L2, then it went too far ;-)
