Energy tariffs.

The difference is that if you do it yourself and go through the likes of topcashback then you can get the cashback and not the switcher company. I'm due £140 for my switch last month.
Also, you know who you are dealing with. I look after my mother in laws energy supplier and for the last 3 years we have had an email saying “sorry you are leaving “ . Turned out that Look after my Bills had got someone’s data wrong and were switching (or trying) the MiL every year. Hopefully stopped it now but have to wait til next year....

Its not to be sniffed at £140, but Look after me Bills will not necessarily put you with the cheapest company. If they do not have a good customer feedback they will not use them.
That aside, the main thing is that people shop around and not let companies use you as Royalty over loyalt.

We had smart meters installed 3 or so years ago, gas and electric. They were not transferrable when we moved supplier. Recently the gas meter seems to have packed up and not noting the usage. Our new supplier is changing both of them to second gen ones which is transferrable between suppliers apparently. Smart meters are the way to go as you don't need to faff with readings etc.

Is it really that Much of a faff to take readings a couple of times a year. Takes a couple of minutes max

Not if it's a couple of times a year. My supplier wants it every month 'to keep up to date' which requires ladders and torches etc.
In the grand scheme of things not a great faff but if the technology is there to save me 5 mins a month, I'm all for it ??.

We've just gone bulb when moving a couple of years ago. One tariff, no fear of missing a better deal with them, and the smug factor of green energy, not that you can see it at the socket because it's the same wires anyway.
I just checked and I could save about £60 when changing to somewhere else but can't be bothered for that.

Am another one who doesn't really "get" the rush for smart meters? Ok, so it might be a faff to take readings for some folk whose meters are in inconvenient places - but otherwise? I already know what's plugged in and what's using energy - and if it's not already turned off, it's unlikely to be so because a meter tells me it's using power? In any case, I already have a smart device that turns off unnecessary lights & appliances - it's called Mrs B.

The downside of them is that you're going to be first in line for "rationing" when the energy crisis - which ain't that far over the horizon - hits us.

Anymore updates/experiences with these 2nd generation smart meters.
Bulb want to install ours free , strange how their prices have recently jumped up .

Mines decent enough

Updates my supplier every 30 mins (can be every day or week but for the car 30 min is needed for the tarif)

Means never read a metre again

We had a smart meter fitted around a year or so ago. It stopped working properly about 3-4 months ago. We have told our supplier but they are not interested.

We had one installed at work but that has never worked correctly. It was a Friday afternoon job and the installer wanted to get home rather than fix it so that it worked.

All in all, no harm to us but frankly no use so far. I like the theory of it, as per post #32, but the practice for us has failed to this point.

Can you still take/see the readings on the meters ?

On the actual meters, which for us are in the garage? Yes. The smart meter does not eliminate the meters it is just meant to send the supplier the readings on a regular basis without human intervention so that the bills are always accurate. It is also meant to change behaviour but that is a separate issue.

In effect I would say to anyone, get the meter fitted. It costs you nothing, it does not stop you checking readings old style and should be a plus, if only the stupid things worked correctly

Is yours SMETS2 or SMETS1 that's just gone dumb?

Just dumped them. After three years of trouble free supply. They've dumped me on standard tariff and can't be bothered to find me a decent offer....gone. Sleepy oleg on it's way !!!!
Very odd. Avro only have one tariff offer at a time.
A few weeks ago they reminded my tariff was due to expire and offered their current one - Avro Simple and Super 12M. No cancellation fee.
I checked the usual comparison sites but it didn't even appear but when I did the calculations vs the best offers Avro was £10 cheaper than any.

No idea to be honest. The installers failed to turn up 3 times before fitting. One eventually arrived and installed it but it stopped working after 6 months. We notified our supplier, nothing. To say I've lost heart or caring is not quite enough. We used to update our readings every month online, we just do the same now as well. Not a hardship.

At some point it will start to annoy me and I will badger them into fixing it. Until then I will remain apathetic.
