Right, I'm throwing this out there to all you well informed folks. I'm looking to change the shafts in my irons to a graphite shaft to help alleviate my advancing arthritis in my hands. I currently use and am happy with the performance of the project x 5.5 shafts I was last fitted with but want a graphite equivalent, what suggestions would you make? I hit a 7 iron around 165 if that helps. Thanks very much in advance for your help 👍

I am already experimenting (put one on my pw) with fat max grips ala Bryson and find them brilliant for my hands. The shaft is a further step.

A general rule when switching from steel to graphite is to not drop more than 20g in weight
PX 5.5 are 115g so anything 95g+ should be OK..
I've used Recoil 95s in stiff (F4) and regular (F3) with good results
MMT come in 95g stiff and might be a decent shout.
Steelfiber...some find them stiff and boardy but definitely worth a try in 95g
KBS TGI are decent too but their stiffness mirrors the weight...the heavier you go the stiffer the shaft.
The 100g is, so I read, quite a scaffold pole!

Over the years, I"ve gone from Rifle 6.0 to 5.5 and now to Recoil regular. I like the Recoil shafts - currently have 95g in the 8, 9, W and GW and 65g in the 5, 6. 7.

I used to use PX 5.5's like you, I have arthritis in my wrist & scoliosis in my spine and switched to Recoil 95 F3 shafts about 3 years ago. I find that they are less debilitating on my back, not sure if they help the arthritis I think they probably do but I know its getting worse so it just seems as if they are not helping.

Distance wise my yardages have dropped a bit but that is probably Ano Domini

Going to that sort of level of change I certainly would go for 'try before buy'.

One thing you have to be very careful with if changing the shaft on existing irons from steel to graphite (or V V) is swing weight.

I would also be looking at a Stiff shaft to to start when comparing a PX5.5 to a graphite shaft.

One thing to check is hosel size . If you have 0.355 taper hosel on the head they may need boring out to .370 for a parallel graphite shaft.

What are those numbers? Parallel shaft irons are 0.370 inch diameter, tapered iron shafts are 0.355 inch diameter.
You may be referring to shaft butt diameters?

Thanks now altered. Brain freeze, thinking about shaft butt sizes and not tip sizes.

Thanks very much guys. I am now leaning towards getting one recoil shaft (95g) and putting it in my 8 iron so it will see plenty of use. I'll also put a big grip on it and have it as my official trial club 👍
I also like the idea of putting lighter shafts in my longer irons.

I have a spare 7 iron (TM P-790) with the recoil shaft, if you wanted to borrow it for a while to try let me know.
Thankyou for the kind offer but I have my shafts 1/2" long and would like to put the fat grip on too for the ultimate test. Again though, much appreciated👍

Have a look on eBay....quite a few demo irons of various makes with recoil 95s in them
20 or 30 quid and you don't have to glue them.....

Just remembered from my other post . If your current shafts are .355 taper and the new shaft is .370 parallel the butt size will be different so buy grips which allow for this (different bore size in the grip)
Personally I use standard on a para shaft and plus one layer of tape on a taper shaft.

Club turned up👍

Hitting it feels so much easier on my hands, much less vibration (even on deliberate mishits). Still feels solid and stable so I think I have a direction to go in. Time to find some suitable heads next 🤣

Cheers Jim but I've gone full on fat grip and it seems to be ok👍
