Played in The Captain's Drive in today, team event and we came 2nd which was acceptable.

On a par 3 one of our Group had his ball just visible in the sand. He was a 4 handicapper and should know the rules and thought he was entitled to free relief.

Told him that this was not an option but he could declare the ball unplayable under a penalty or if he was adament proceed under Rule 3-3. He did not score on the hole and proceeded to hit his ball like a cricket shot (bad form).

Comments please

I hope you showed him the ruling in your rule book which is always in your bag?
IT is actually

I did not need to as I would not accept what he was claiming.

2 holes later I wanted the flag attending whilst off the green and he said that was not possible!

However he did have 2 eagles but i had the flag attended

I was always told it was either in or out if you were off the green and that you couldn't have the flag attended?

Mickelson had it attended from about 80yds a few weeks ago.

I'm sure you can have it tended from anywhere.

Rule 17-1

Flagstick Attended, Removed or Held Up

"Before making a stroke from anywhere on the course, the player may have the flagstick attended, removed or held up to indicate the position of the hole.
If the flagstick is not attended, removed or held up before the player makes a stroke, it must not be attended, removed or held up during the stroke or while the player’s ball is in motion if doing so might influence the movement of the ball."

Can't stress too often how important it is for everyone to read the rules more than once. Can save you strokes on the course. Also do the Rules Quiz on the R and A site every now and then - they change the questions regularly. I'm always finding out things I didn't know.

An interesting point is that your opponent is not obliged to comply with a request to attend and that you have no entitlement to redress should he refuse to do so.

Decision 17.1/2 refers.

That is interesting. Didn't know that but it makes sense. I suppose it means if some joker asks me to walk 200 yards to the green to attend the flag I have the right to refuse. I'd be annoyed if someone refused to attend it for me on a long putt though.

Interesting point. I would have been a tad annoyed as we were in the same team!
