Apart from any unpleasantness (which cheesed me off because I missed it) which cut short the discussion, I have one point to clarify something for Justone.
I don’t know much about East Sussex National but I assume it’s a commercial outfit which has paid staff to run most things. They do, however,as an affiliated club, have to have, as a minimum, a handicap committee with a minimum of 3 members, the majority of which must be club members.

It's a commercial outfit, due to it's size and facilities it has to be.

When I was a member in the late 90's it had paid staff on the handicap committee and to run the competitions plus a director of golf who oversaw it all. He was a pga pro as were the other people who worked running the golf operations. It may have had members involved but I don't remember that. I wish it hadn't had money problem during it's early years as there were plans for a North and South course which I once got to see and hear about. The original owners really did have great plans for club but the change in ownership and money problems disrupted it which is why it took so long to build the hotel next to the club house.

To me, there is space in the world for members clubs, and commercial clubs. Each to their own, but they are different. I would never, ever, consider joining a commercial club. I like a club that is run by the members, for the members, and not for profit. We have an elected board, an elected committee, and I would not have it any other way.
