is it just me or does it seem that everyone that is now being diagnosed as dyslexia are kids? I know 3 adults out of however many billions there are that have been apparently diagnosed as dyslexia. but there are at least 100 in my school. is it just an excuse for being dumb?

It is a serious issue and in my schooldays wasn't really recognised as much as it is today. It can be a real learning handicap although in my day kids were labelled as slow or lazy perhaps incorrectly.

On a lighter note you know what they say though

I worked with a guy who has it, he used to see things as pictures rather then words , he is one of the best electricians i've worked with and a really clever cookie.

I have it mildly, it was never diagnosed, I just did worse in the exams where spelling was an issue.
My laptop checks my spelling, that's why I seem able to spell!!

I was forced to write with my right hand at school. I play golf RH but snooker, football, tennis and darts I’m left handed. It was a big issue for me and it knocked me back for years. I sometimes think I’m dyslexic to a small degree although I’ve never been tested. I can still spell words differently some days or perhaps mix up the words or miss out a letter and not notice it. Maybe I’m just getting paranoid cause I’m thick.

Why is Dyslexia so hard to spell?
Same reason that "www" is meant to be short for "world wide web", even though it's quicker to say "world wide web"!

Mate of mine from college was mildly dyslexic I think. His spelling was quite bad, but hs mis-spelled things in a way that wasn't normal. "Yoused" instead of "used", stuff like that. He was clever though, and has been running his own computer installation and support business for years.

I learn't the other day that everyone is Dyslexic - it is not something you either have or dont. Its something everyone has but with different scales of severity.

On the way home fron the DNA(National Dyslexic Association)

A dyslexic kid asks his mum if he can have a McDonalds

His mum says "if you can spell it you can have one"

"Sod that" says the kid "I'll have a KCF"

back to the OP,

I've just been reading the British Dyslexia Association's list of indicators. If I had read this when my eldest was just starting school (he's 30), I would have been certain he was dyslexic. Yet despite having ALL the pre-school indicators he was one of the brightest kids in his class, went on from missing two years school through ME to passing his GCSE's within two months of starting back, got a law degree (part of which was spent studying in Germany) and is currently learning Japanese and Icelandic.

Sometimes I think that 'we' become too ready to label.
