Driving Distances

The pros on TV are of course the best golfers but with the high temps they play in the super short fairways then play on
The 300 yards drives still very impressive but dont impress me as much, cause i know im not a million miles behind that,
Well on the distance part anyway

Alright Shania Twain!

Even with summer fairways I top out at 255yards maybe 260 with a hard bounce once in a blue moon.

You lose 1 yard for every 3 degrees F below 70 - 70 is what all balls are optimised to work at. Over 70 makes no difference.
So you'd easily lose 10 yards carry just because it's cold. Add onto that the restricted swing of extra layers, little roll, wind etc etc

it differs for me, especially as my driver shaft/degree combo is completely wrong for me.
but on a (very rare) good sweetly hit shot at the moment, it's going roughly between 255-270, but usually never in the right direction.
driving is the easily the weakest part of my game, stats from 2013 showing around 30-40 percent of FIR

Difficult for me to say really as I play on a links course so could be anything from 180 to 320. I guess flat calm windless conditions in summer I'd get it out to about 260.

I have hit some pretty long drives this winter on some pretty rank days.

Played today in cold windy conditions. Flushed a couple of drives but they went nowhere. I am short at the best of times and felt a little swizzled that my Sunday best went nowhere. Ho hum. It is drying out and hopefully it'll warm up soon so I'll be back to my regular 235-240 yards. Still if they are straight I'll cope

I read an interesting article on warming golf balls. It suggested that putting a ball in your pocket would not make any difference as golf balls absorb heat slowly. It suggested the best thing is to leave them next to the hot water tank over night and they will warm up and retain the heat longer.

Unlikely to be the same report but I read something similar which quoted 10hrs as the sort of time needed to make a difference. I still leave my clubs in the car overnight Saturday though if I'm playing Sunday as well!

But they are carrying them to 300yds, with another good few yards run. The short hitters on tour are carrying them over 280

Not quite. Only 40 players average a carry of 280yds which means even those players hit a lot of shots shorter than that.

The shortest players on tour average a carry of 250yds (which means a lot of drives carry LESS than that).

Here's some FACTS for you.... http://www.pgatour.com/content/pgatour/stats/stat.02409.html

These are with the best conditions (generally) and the best fitted equipment possible... well apart from Rory and Tiger :p

I carry the ball between 240/255 all year depending on where on the club face I hit the ball. The main difference for me is lack of roll in the winter months. I average about 250/270. Many will claim 300 ish, but I have only seen a small selection reach that mrk, not inc downhill holes or wind with, doglegs ect. Just a plain old lash on a nice even fairway.

Getting the right club set up and ball and this will help keep your game more consistent all year round. A few yards in roll to be lost when playing softer grounds but you should get roughly the same flight.

I dont believe anyone who claims to carry the ball over 240 yards on a regular basis unless I see it. Most struggle to carry 200 but for some reason feel they are inadequate if they own up to it.

We can all hit one now and then that comes out the screws with optimum spin and launch conditions that carries 270 yards, you cannot claim this as your average though.

Some can do it but in reality how many club players?

I would say i carry it between 240 and 250 most of the time , then the run i get depends on the condition of the fairways , i am fairly straight most of the time , could try for more but i rather be straight then have a few extra yards

I do use the Long driver by the way, Which is 48 inches, its so so long but the hours on the range is now paying off
Many people say its a little gimmicky, but then ive blasted the ball 30 yards over their ball

Not sure what people here think about the Long tom driver, but im driving the ball (straight) 230 240 yards in 0/1Celsius weather
Anyone else given that driver a go

Track man war! Show us all these claims in bright lights!

I carry 275 with 15000rpm forward spin averaging 315 yards with a 95mph swing. Prove it :)

I believe you right, I'll today add my global driver stats on here. I have done so already when testing the new rocket blades. Tested pw-4 and added photos of flight distance ect. I'll do the same with the driver.

Deja vu (as Del Boy might say).

I actually left the forum for several months last year when there seemed to be a spate of these threads; "who can drive it the furthest?"; "who needs only a 7 iron to hit 170 yards?"; "who has the biggest todger?".

None ever seem to be supported by evidence and all are incredibly boring.

Like 3rd & 4th place at the Matchplay - Who cares?

Last year a good drive for me with no help from the wind was about 160yds. With a new driver and swing changes over the winter I am getting about 180yds a good swing speed is about 75mph, It will be very interesting to see what I get in the summer this year.

Have you tried warming your balls !! :ooo:

There was a letter in the 'rules' section a few magazines ago asking about keeping a ball in your pocket and producing it for the next hole as it is nicely warmed - it legal provided you declare it to be in play of course.

I have done this a few times - made no difference whatsoever - lol - but it does wind up my playing partner a bit so is good for the banter.....I'll put this nice and warm Srixon in play now that you have duffed your ice cold one!!

Putting your ball in your pocket for a couple of minutes ain't gonna make a blind bit of difference

I'm with you SR. We have a couple of ditches at our place that need a 240\250 carry from the white tees, I know of 3 people who can carry them, one is our pro and one used to play professionally on the Sunshine Tour. The 3rd just hits the ball a long way.
