Just browsing round the taylormade website only to find out the new burner superfast is 46.5 inches in length, i personally find this a bit ridiculous, there has to be a point where extra shaft length really compromises the potential accuracy we can get.

so what do you reckon about modern drivers shaft length?

We've already reached the point of stupidity, if you believe many of the pros/coaches/fitters out there.

I have 2 x 45" drivers and one 46" which sits waiting patiently for my swing to hit full health.... :)

mines 45 inches and im happy with it, i dont really see the need especially when a driver like that isnt particularly aimed at pros, most amateurs would much rather prefer accuracy over more distance, i know i would, and the likes of TM are pushing for more distance, not what golfs all about. you learn to play with the distances you have, but its impossible to learn to play with a lack of accuracy.

I think there is still a trade off between the forgiveness of the TM drivers and their length which means a large proportion of handicap golfers will be able to hit it reasonably well the majority of the time but I think we are probably close to the maximum length for that to remain the case

TM are offering a 'longest drive or your money back' offer with this. I believe however with a shaft that long you may find yourself playing your next shot from some of the places Anthony Kim finds himself in trees, bushes, car parks etc. You best make sure your swing is in a healthy place before hitting a shaft that long. :D

I have been to 2 custom fitting sessions and both fitters were very derogatory about the increasing length of driver shafts. Both of them agreed that longer shafts made it far more difficult for the average golfer to be consistant and one commented that a number of people would benefit from having a driver shaft no longer than 44 inches
