The last few months I have been driving the ball extremely high with my g5 10.5r (graffaloy pro launch blue shaft). . . . so with Christmas money in hand I booked a time at my local fitting centre and thought I'd share my results.

I went in completely open minded with regard to brand (but did have a £200 budget!!) and, after blasting away with numerous models with varying lofts and shafts I was astonished at the difference in results. It's amazing how far we actually hit the ball, compared to how far we THINK we hit the ball.

The launch angle of my G5 was 17 / 18 degrees, and average carry was 220 yards (I thought I hit it further than that).

Didnt get on with any of the Taylormades or Callaway's and the G10 went too high (down to the Ping factory shaft).

It came down to the F Speed 9 degree stiff shaft and the Cleveland Hi-bore XL, 9.5 degree stiff shaft. I hit both clubs the same (avg carry 240/245 yards) and a launch angle of 13/14 degrees but hit the Cleveland that bit more consistent. Can't wait to give it a crack next weekend.

Without sounding like a smart arse....you did the right thing. If you were getting 17-18 degrees launch with your old driver, you were giving away a fair bit of distance.
This type of launch is only suitable for really slow swings!!
You should do well.....nice job!

Hi there
I have been thinking about custom fitting for a while now but am a bit confused about where to get this done. Can AG/nevadabobs do the launch angle stuff or would I need to go somewhere like The Belfry etc??

thanks in advance

Go to your local pro or to a recognised fitting center like The Belfry. Do not go to AG etc for fitting. They will have a limited number of options to try and lack the knowledge and expertise to give proper fitting advice.

Personally I bought my driver from a registered club maker and that is another option.

You might want to try the Fitting Centre at Brampton Park Driving Range. It's suppose to be very good I'm told. Well, coming from Norway I know it is a bit cheeky to lecture Englishmen on golf in Uk, but still....

I am going to have a session on a launch monitor on Thursday. Looking forwards to it. Obviously all my kit will be wrong, and my swing will be awful, but be nice to know the stats.
Supposed to be using it for a driver fitting, but may just pay the £40 and leave it at that. For the money, I get an hour with the pro, and a good session with the launch monitor. Get a £20 discount off a driver if I buy on the day.

Where to you live fade_away? I only ask because I am from the area and could point you to a few places (I live in Rutland). If you are going down the Orka route, I would recommend travelling a bit further to see John Whitehead near Northampton. Have been to both and John is superb, he sorted my Orka driver and in doing so killed off my Bannana slice.

I'm in Hertfordshire but visit rellies in Peterborough quite often so Rutland is not out of the question. I've looked at the Orka site and it all looks good. Anybody else have experience of Orka???

I have a Kii driver and 4i hybrid and fund them to be great clubs at a great price. Am going to be trying the Kii irons in the next week or so and will report on findings. There is a thread about Orka on here somewhere that includes some comments from the MD.

Would recommend emailing them and they can recommend a club maker in your area. Most club fitters also stock other brands and will not just try you on what you went in to buy.

Can anyone suggest a decent place for custom fitting in the Berkshire/Surrey area. I could go to Callaway on the Leatherhead Road in Chessington (head office) but I'd be limited to the one make.

Don't want to go to any AG and get fitted by some snotty nosed shop boy who doesn't know his MOI from his elbow.

Any suggestions welcome as I think it might be time to trade my old X12's for something from this millenium

I am going to McClelland golf at Silvermere golf center off the A3. They have 5 golf professionals who do custom fitting, combined with a quick lesson if you want, they stock all the major brands and have a flight scope monitor. The fitting is done on an outdoor range, so you also see the flight, not just in an indoor net.

Have a look at their web site (google silvermere golf or McClelland golf) and see if this is what you are after.

GB72, a 'forumers' report on the Kii irons would be great. Looking forward to it as I may be in the market for a set of irons next year. Current favourites are Mizuno MX19 and Ping S58's - haven't tried either yet as what I buy will depend on the bonus and what my pro thinks I can handle.
