My club has sent out a questionnaire asking whether we think there are too many competitions. Before submitting my views I would like to know what happens at other clubs with regard to drawn comps.

Thanks

Too many Competitions ?

How many competitions do you have in a season ? Given that the season runs from April to October and the best months are June-Aug I'm curious to know just how many comps your club are running.

We tend to have 2-3 per month mid May - Mid Sept when midweek medals can be played with the extra daylight.

In general I thing most clubs have the mix about right so that everyone gets a chance to play at some stage or other.

Hi,

My club has a comp every Saturday during the 'season' and most Saturdays out of season. None of them are drawn (by drawn I mean that you put your name down on a list and you are drawn to play with others (usually based upon a similar HC). All the comps in my club are chosen i.e. members put their names down with their mates against a certain time spot. In my previous club, most comps were chosen but all medal comps were drawn.

My previous club was in a different country (Southern Africa), with a different HC system and the members had a wholly different approach to what golf was about and what membership of a golf club was about. Medal comps were so unpopular they were restricted, by popular vote, to one a month. There was a comp every Saturday all year round. The list went up for the following Saturday at 6pm on the previous Saturday and there was a queue waiting for it. The Saturday field was always over subscribed with a reserve list. All comps were 4 balls and every 4 ball through the balls up and played a better ball for who bought the drinks. Prize-giving was at 6pm; yes that right every comp on every Saturday was resulted and the winners given their prize in the club house at 6pm. There was no formal dress code (other than no jeans etc) and players in the afternoon field would sit having a drink after they played waiting for the results at 6pm.

In my current club, two thirds of the membership never play in comps and never play with anyone other than their mates. Even the one third that play in comps don’t want a draw because they want to choose who they play with.

I am trying to work out why my previous club was so successful and why my current club is struggling.

All competitions should be drawn.

You don't find the pros choosing who they want to play with at the Open. I know its a different level but the principle is the same. Play competitions in the same group 4 weeks running and each week someone from your group wins, questions are going to be asked - even if it was all above board.

At my club all competitions are drawn. You can ask for an early or late time if you need but you won't know who you're playing with until the sheet goes up on the board. And all handicaps a mixed up. Last Medal I played with a 6 and a 26.

Drawn comps are not popular, as a lot of people want a fixed tee time, so they can do other things over the weekend too, like see their famillies. Some like early tee slots, some late. If all comps are drawn, they would be very undersubscribed, as many wouldn't enter, or would scrub when they saw their tee off time.

We average about 2 comps a month in season, but have about a 5 week break in the July/August due to this being the holiday season. I have never understood this, as this is the period when the course is at its best, but that is the case.

That’s easy sorted, you just have a sheet with half hour time slots where you put your name down. At my old club if I want a time around 9am I would put my name down in the 9 to 9.30 slot. Only so many names can go in each time slot and all the players in that half hour slot get drawn, and so on. That way you have no guarantee who plays with who but you still have a time band to work with.

Yup, that's the easy solution.

Got to agree that all counting rounds should be drawn. At my club now there are very few that are drawn, so you get the same guys playing week in week out together. It can lead to their own "local" rules for starters, which of course is the thin end of the wedge, and it hardly encourages a "club" spirit.

The other point which is somewhat connected to that is that undrawn comps can make it hard for new members to get a game if every slot os being filled with a set fourball every week.

If you want to play with your mates, avoid competitions, if you want to play a comp you play with whoever you get drawn with.

We start the year with a winter league.
We run a stableford comp every sat from the yellows and a separate comp on sun from the whites.
monthly medals take place between march and sept.
Turkey shoots run from end of oct to beginning of dec.

we also have a few mixed events and team events during the year.

All our competitions are drawn. You enter in the pro shop and you can put your name into any half hour segment on the entry sheet you want and you will then get randomly picked with two others somewhere in that timeframe. Nice and easy. If you want an early or late time you just pick that end of the draw sheet and you get to play with loads of different people and varying standards. Great system and it works.
