...how every golfing "breakthrough" seems to come on a Sunday, and by the time you can get out again to reinforce your good play, the working week has gone by and you can't for the life of you remember what you did so right last week that you are doing so wrong now?

:D

Very true. I had a chipping lesson recently and duely went to the club in the afternoon and practiced it and was happily holing out regularly. Got onto the course last weekend and it was back to sqaure one again. Had a day off today and worked on it again and got it going again but no doubt by the weekend it will have reverted to its normal dross

I know what you mean. :)

It's even worse for me, as I can work any day at almost any time, I hate playing well and then realising I haven't got a game lined up for weeks....argh....

not being funny mate but don't you ever reach the point where you think "sod this, enough is enough" and just accept that all the lessons, drills and practice aren't working???
I've been a member on here for 18 months or so now and during that time have read so much about your practice and drills, but very little on your actual "enjoyment" of the game. You seem to be putting yourself under so much pressure to improve all the time, whether it's your driving, iron play, but more often chipping and putting. Forget the lessons for a while, the comfort breaks, the one hour warm ups, the swing guru's and the mechanics of the actual swing and go out there and have a laugh!
Turn up 5 minutes before your tee time, run up to the first tee out of breath with tee pegs dropping out of your pocket, your shoelaces un-done and your glove flapping away, put a ball down and smack it up the jacksie. Maybe have a toot before you tee off! Your swing may not improve but your scores might as you take some of the pressure off yourself.
I get wound up if I don't play well, of course I do. If I didn't it would show that the passion had gone. But I really do think that you put yourself under so much pressure to do well you are losing sight of why you are actually out there. Think about it.
Love you

Smiffy the Guru :D

The trouble is, to some people like homer and many others the practice sessions, lessons and more practice sessions are all part of the game.
Some never practice at all. Especially their putting. No names mentioned. :)
As long as we are enjoying what we do we should allow others to do what they do.
I'm sure Homer is as happy as a pig in the wet stuff whiling away the hours on the practice tee and green.
Live and let practice. :D

Must say that im making an effort to "try" and practice my short game most nights after work. But it seems that when I get it right on the practice strip, it's back to crap on the course :(

Just call me Bond, Bobby Bond :D

I think Bob has hot the nail on the head. I love the practice and the struggle to try and put the improvements into my game. Sadly I'm not blessed with natural talent foer this game and even back in my former life I had to work preety damn hard to get anything back from the game. Now I'm older, with a body that doesn't work as well and so I need to work even harder.

Contrary to popular belief I don't wander onto the course analysing my swing and making sure I turn my hips 22.6 degrees or that my swing speed is a constant 96.4 on a 3/4 7 iron. I'm actually going out this year with a more determined Homer (as per the blog) to try and grind a score out as best I can whatever happens. The fact that I managed to go out in +7 with a triple on the 1st is testament, especially given the strong wind and difficult conditions that it is starting to work. OK granted I lost the ability drove on the back nine but that was just me and not me getting technical

When I'm out playing I do actually enjoy it although no-one enjoys playing badly and even if I'm out on my own and trying different shots when the course is quiet its always a joy to be out and not a chore to be out and striving to improve. I did go way over the top two summers ago and worked on my swing most days. The result was a collapse in form akin the the banking collapse and a lesson hard learned.

I did this back in December, and shot my best round of the year...

;)

I believe that you can over analize things and that tends to have an adverse effect sometimes, however practice does make perfect, permanent, brilliant as my little boy says, sooner or later all the practice will pay off. Most players i know who dont practice always moan about there game, whos fault is that, anyone who thinks they can play once a week or even worse every now and then and then expect to plat well is in cookoo land.

You'd love my mate Norm then.
Plays off 9. Never had a lesson in his life and never, (ever), practices.
Can go 3 months or more without picking up a club and then comes out of the traps like a whippet.
Natural golfer who just smacks it around the gaff. Doesn't think, just hits it.
;)

Homer,

I'd love to take a video of your swing to a pro and ask "What the f*** is going on here? You've been giving this guy lessons, call yourself a pro?!!!"

I reckon you could be shown how to swing properly in 20 minutes if you wanted to learn... do you WANT to learn or are you happy with what you have?

I don't necessarily agree with Smiffy as I do believe in at least warming up before teeing off (whenever possible) but it does seem that the pro's you are getting lessons from are filling your head (and your swing) with a load of crap. Why not take on the challenge of doing things RIGHT instead of adding 3000 little changes?

Failing that go and have a holiday somewhere near Bobmac's house, I'm sure he'll have some time spare for you.

Total rubbish. Sorry but there you go. So far I've dropped from 20 to 11 (ok crept back to 12 but its only a blip). As I've said I'm not and never was a natural and so my game has always had huge errors in it. As a youngster able to play and practice everyday it was pretty easy to paper over the cracks and get it round. These days where I can't hit hundreds of balls it's much harder. I've had a huge problem with tempo which if you compare some old videos I've posted with those just before Christmas has come a long way and so is giving me much more time through the shot to do more things right. The lifting out of the shot which I think you're referring to is something I think has been ingrained from way back and is probably there to stay unless I really deconstruct everything and to be honest I've not got the time or inlcination. I'll work at getting a better set up (which I have) making a better turn, which I am and hope that the more consistant tempo helps me stay down for longer and therefore make a more powerful swing.

I actually find it disprespctful to the pro and myself to imply he is filling my head with crap. If you've read my previous post I'm not actually going out on the cpurse with hundreds of swing thoughts and this year is about hitting it, finding it and hitting it again.

My short game still needs some remedial work on but that is more down to me not working on the right things and ingraining bad habits (set up and breaking wrists) and is something a couple of 30 minute lessons will rectify. Can't see to much talk of technical issues being involved. More a case of right set up, right motion and going away and drilling it in

Sure, I appreciate your thoughts and don't mean to be disrespectful of your game...after all it is YOUR game and I'm fully aware of that. I love how much you love golf, I adore enthusiasm for the sport, I play practically every day and can talk about it endlessly. If you are happy with your game/swing then you have no need to talk about it.. if however you aren't happy then you should be seeking advice from someone who will actually help. Looking at your swing it doesn't make me think that you've been near anyone prepared to offer you that advice... or you simply don't want to hear it.

I can't see you getting lower than 9 (maybe) with your swing, if you are happy with that then start enjoying what you have. You talk a game as if you want to get to low single figures, that'll never happen if you don't grab the bull by the horns and MAKE it happen, it won't happen by magic, miracles are for the bible.

Tell your pro if he can get you to 7 h/cap in the next 2 years I'll give him £1000
