Dont buy this

haha, I have had quite a few ebay alcohol fuelled impulse purchases, luckily always got my money back and some :)

Advice for a newbie is dont rush out and buy a full set especially cheapo sets, start with maybe a 6 iron and a pw

Steer clear of drivers, I made that mistake and now on my 5th as still believe its the club and not my crap swing ;)

I did exactly the same and on his third shot the club head went further than the ball..... I guess it's all down to personal experience!

Karl

I took one of the guys I work with down to the range to give him a few basics and he had a Dunlop Tour Set which he'd bought from Sports Direct.

I hit both the irons and hybrids and to be honest they were easy to hit and for the money were good value for somebody wanting to get into the game.

The Dunlop Tour balls although on the hard side are fine for a beginner and at £8.99 for 24 tick all the boxes.

I've also found the £4.99 Dunlop leather gloves as good as some costing twice the price. Some of their trousers and t- shirts are also very functional and good value for money.

Don't get me wrong it's not the best kit in the world but for somebody setting out on a budget it's far better than some people would suggest.

I guess I've been quite lucky. I always try before I buy so haven't really had any wasted purchases from a club buying perspective. Maybe a few training aids along the way that I thought would give me a short cut to a better swing but even then I've used most of them and still have the majority that I dig out every now and again

Totally agree, some of the stuff in Sports Direct are a bargain, especially the balls and gloves you mention.
Worst purchase I've made was a range finder for £10. You just point it at he flag and adjust the buttons until the top og the flag and the ground fall between 2 lines and it tells you the yardage. Problem - it assumes all flags are the same length and you can see both the top and bottom of the flag. Add to this the fact that you need a very steady hand and it becomes unusable.

Haven't bought one myself, but these magnetic wrist bands? What are they about?[/QUOTE]

Bought a callaway one for £20 about 2 years ago (the big bangle type metal option was £80).

I had a clicky wrist that used to "go" on me about twice a round. When it did I would play a horrendous shot, as it always clicked at the top of my backswing. Since Ive had the Callaway magnetic band, it has only gone about twice in about 150 rounds.

My mate (honest) bought a pair of "special" glasses that would pick out any ball in the rough, even if just a tiny bit of ball is showing, even if amongst a load of silver birch upturned leaves, blah, blah.

He soon binned them.

bought a taylormade r9 and sold it after a month and went back to my r7. the shaft was too heavy on it so my brother took it and loves it. everyone is happy.

Have you ever bought anything golf related and quickly realised...what a waste of money that was?
Maybe it's the latest driver that promised longer and straighter, the energy bar that promised limitless power or the "go faster tees"
What would you advise newbies to steer clear of ?

A set of golf clubs ?

If you want your life turned upside down, get yourself a sprog. It's easier, and in the long run, probably cheaper and will definitely cause less grief...

You can start a collection under the stairs. ;)
Just don't let HID see it

I have small golf bag in the hall that is now getting populated as I get to know my clubs.............I was given the set I use by someone so fortunately had not spent out but now have to use all the will power to stay out of the golf shops ..............hard very hard !

On a serious note...stay away from the golf web sites that look too good to be true...they normally are and there are LOTS OF THEM.
If in doubt, please ask first as there are a lot of knowledgeable people in here.

I have so far been good and tried before actually buying a club but found the web the best way to get balls whilst still a newbie to the game, got a very good price on lake balls - but so far so good none lost.

Avoid lake balls Liz, they are rubbish. Once you lose them invest in a good dozen balls specially designed for ladies (we have slower swings). I like lady precepts, but they are expensive. a good compromise is the lady pinnacle (most of the boys on here are likely to tell you that they are like hitting rocks, but they are honestly fine for a newbie) x

Wait until you play a course with lakes. Those balls have a habit of trying to find their way home.

I seem to be gaining balls as the guys I play with keep giving me some, will use what I have got for a while till I get to grips with all the clubs, and the dogs at home seem to like them if I get the putting things out at home too.............
