Have you ever bought anything golf related and quickly realised...what a waste of money that was?
Maybe it's the latest driver that promised longer and straighter, the energy bar that promised limitless power or the "go faster tees"
What would you advise newbies to steer clear of ?

I'd suggest they steer clear of all the latest products which claim to make them longer, faster and more accurate than any other golfer...as they won't really help a newbie.

Hybrids. I wouldn't say steer clear as they work for some, but definitely try before you buy, or buy second hand first.

And those silly rubber wrist straps that claim to give you super powers or whatever, swerve them altogether! But buy a HFH wrist band instead!

Id advise ALL Newbies........DO NOT buy a driver, buy a decent quality 3 wood, or even 5 wood 1st
Master that, improve swing and game, then move onto the driver
Ive seen many a half decent round destroyed by 'The Driver'.......

I bought this thing from yes golf a V easy or something absolute ............

ha ha only joking Bobmac its the only aid I use I love the way it helps you keep conected to the putter head

Cheap shoes or waterproofs.

It's important to be comfortable so buy a mid range proven pair of shoes and waterproof clothing with good reviews

Starter half sets from a high st general 'sports shop', usually very poorly made.

Get proper advice from a pro shop and get decent second hand clubs for the same price.

Not particularly expensive, but cheap gloves are a must void. I baught one that was going cheap at the counter of a golf shop once, about £4 I think. Played a couple of shots with it, and I honestly think wearing a crisp packet on my left hand would have been more effective.

Yes. My previous set of 'custom fitted' Cleveland irons from a big shop near J10 M25. Sold to me as the ball speed was higher...except I didn't appreciate the massive spin rate increase. Lost a club and half in distance

Haven't bought one myself, but these magnetic wrist bands? What are they about?

I believe Aztec bought some alignment sticks a while ago but when he hit one with his iron they broke - shoddy goods i think ;)

Whatever you do, try them out first. Bought the driver I'd always lusted after in 2010, hardly hit a fairway for 3 months. Ebay'd it.

I've been reading this thread whilst shaking my head in shame and embarrassment...

As a newbie (only 4 rounds so far and a couple of trips to the range) I have made a lot of purchases which are directly against the advice here!

Mistake #1: Tried the driver in my bag, couldn't hit it, so ordered a Cleveland Mashie 15.5 degree to use off the tee instead. Without testing it.

Mistake #2: Needed some balls. The box said "goes further with no extra effort" (or some such rubbish). Bought them for a lot of pounds, then proceeded to hit them "further (into the rough) with no extra effort".

Mistake #3: Bought a cheap glove. There was one in the bag which was quite old and frayed. Bought one for less than a fiver, used it once, and now I'm back to the decade old frayed one!

I'm now using lake balls until I have a round where I lose less than 3 (not happened yet), and I appear to have lucked out with the Cleveland Mashie. I can hit the fairway much more often than with the driver.

"More money than sense" sums me up quite well. And I don't have much money, so that tells you all you need to know...

I love wandering round AG or my local pro shop. I could spend hundreds in there every day. Think looking at new stuff is certainly part of the golf bug i have got!
I would avoid buying any hardware from Sports Direct. Clothes, gloves are ok, but their golf balls are over priced and their clubs are awful. I agree with some of the others, get a decent 2nd hand set from golf bidder!

Karl

I took one of the guys I work with down to the range to give him a few basics and he had a Dunlop Tour Set which he'd bought from Sports Direct.

I hit both the irons and hybrids and to be honest they were easy to hit and for the money were good value for somebody wanting to get into the game.

The Dunlop Tour balls although on the hard side are fine for a beginner and at £8.99 for 24 tick all the boxes.

I've also found the £4.99 Dunlop leather gloves as good as some costing twice the price. Some of their trousers and t- shirts are also very functional and good value for money.

Don't get me wrong it's not the best kit in the world but for somebody setting out on a budget it's far better than some people would suggest.

Not so much the "Dont buy this" as a rule of thumb when lookin at gear.......But i would encourage newbies ............"Dont buy this".................. marketing crap that we are being fed by manufacturers and magazines and books..........

Im using a driver that if i was to believe all the twaddle thats well outside my handicap requirement....But......Its the most consistent one that ive hit and iv tried about a 6 already.......Better players my ass:(....

Also im going back to my wilsonstaff FG Tour irons again something that im not supposed to be swinging either according to the powers that be.....

Agree with buying a HFH band, but the Power Balance bands really do work,I have a Power Balance and the golf has improved..I thinking buying one try before you buy....
