Does Rory need a new caddy?

But isn't it part of JP's job to stop him making mistakes?

The mistakes in question were largely missed putts, and a pull into the water. Nowt the caddy could do. He birdied that hole Friday and Saturday, so no reason to think he couldn't do it again. Just a bad shot, not a reason to sack your caddy.....

Maybe - but there was a lot more riding on the shot on Sunday than there was on the other 2 days and pressure can do terrible things to a golf swing. Don't get me wrong - I think Rory's a fantastic player and should go on to even bigger and better things...I just have a nagging feeling that he needs to develop more mental toughness when the pressure's on.

I feel the caddy has to offer advice when requested and try
to influence a player's choice if he thinks the player is wrong, but you can't stand there having an argument about it because you can't put any doubts into your player's mind.
He's better off hitting his (wrong maybe) shot with 100% confidence than being persuaded by the caddie to play a shot he has doubts over.

If I was a caddie, I would try to cajole and suggest what I thought was the best plan for the hole, but once the player has his mind made up you tell him it's the right thing, you love it, etc. etc. regardless of whether you think that or not.

This is my first post...so ...HI :)

i stumbled across this site whilst looking for a course review and couldn't help wanting to post on this topic...

Rory hit an awful hook at a time when he couldn't hit a hook - any other shot would have done. 3 wood was definitely the correct club, or Driver, JP had nothing to do with the shot once Rory had the club in hand, I doubt he gave him a bum line.

Caddie gives bad line, player hits correct shot - caddie fault
Caddie gives correct line, plater hits horrid little hook at pressure moment... Player fault all day long.

Even if the caddy makes a strong case for a safe line, different club etc if you are young and to be honest gung ho like McIlroy then chances are you are still going to go for the shot. Caddies can only do so much. I think in time Rory will become more circumspect as even Woods has. It was a bad shot at the wrong time and to be honest not a caddy error

Rory's fault, not JP's imo. As said, no problem previous day(s).

As for VdV. It's very difficult to get a player who has put himself in a winning position by playing aggressively to play defensively for the last hole. Watched Bones take several attempts (at least 4!) to get the message across to Phil when he was 2 in front on the last not long ago to take 4-iron off the tee rather than Driver on dangerous finishing hole. Still birdied it!

Hope Rory keeps being aggressive, but stops doing stupid things - like potentially breaking his wrist!
