haven't played that much lately but seem when i do its always " how many points did you get " seems to happen alot on here too, people commenting about how many points they scored ,now im all for stableford comps it gives everyone a chance, it makes me laugh when someone mentions " i played really well and got 35 points but blobbed on a couple of holes" surely focusing on how many points instead of how many shots you took isnt giving you a real idea of how you played especially if your 2 blobs were a 10 and an 8,

My opinion would be you need to play some medal golf too, maybe even once a month, but you need the added pressure of medal to help you progress.

agree there i prefer playing the medals, cant afford mistakes so makes you concentrate more, its a good test of who can handle the pressure better :D

I agree. The plus side of stableford is that it allows everyone to compete, even with some bad holes. But strokes is the true test. I think as long as we are honest with ourselves then points is fun.

Medal is a great leveller.

I play with some lads who will put in close to 40 points quite regular.

Get them in a medal and its game over, up to +10 shots on their handicap.

Stableford allows a blob and a birdie with a shot on a hole gets you right back in the mix.

So yeah, get in the medals!

Ash!!

Worst thing you can do is play Stableford as it engenders a mindset of only counting the shots that you like. Play Medal every time, even if the comp is a Stableford, I mean treat the round as a Medal. You'll end up a better golfer for it.

I personally dont like playing stableford, I feel its a bit of a cop out tbh.
Stroke play is a truer reflection of golfing ability in my opinion.
I really like matchplay as well and I think its the hole-to-hole competitivness of it that I really enjoy!
In a stableford comp you could (potentially) score 2 fifteens and still svore well, or even take 5 off a tee and decide to blob a hole and never really know your true score!
I have won a couple of stableford comps in the past but tbh they felt a bit like hollow victories!

We tend to play Stablefords in the Winter so with howling gales and cold ball distances at least you can pick it up once you get to a double.
Stroke play mainly in the Summer when everybody should be able to cope with the conditions. Just make sure you play a provisional if you miscue into some of the longer rough.

Even of 16 I feel I stand more of a chance of a top ten finish in Stroke play rather than Stableford as we have a lot of high handicappers who can have 4 blobs and still make 40 points. ;)

Stableford is mickey mouse golf

I'm surprised at this from a good player. Surely a good, STEADY player will also return a fully finished gross scorecard on a stableford day?
We had a stableford t'other week. Only 8 players in the whole field (100?) finished every hole. I was one. Therefore I effectively returned a medal score. 2 birds, one stone.

For most people, it's like "I made 37 points with 2 blobs" therefore, I'm better than my h'cap suggests...i.e. cheap bragging rights.

I'd have thought stableford makes a lot of sense to all types of players for different reasons.

It's a rare occasion that I don't complete every hole, effectively making every round a medal round.
If I blob a hole in Stableford it's generally a double bogey on a non-shot hole or perhaps a triple but either way I'll almost certainly finish the hole.

Except at Hanbury Manor - didn't actually finish many holes that day...

Stableford is what I play when it's not medal but I always talk about my round in terms of gross score. As I've said before, take as few shots as you can, points will take care of themselves.

I would be happier with shooting 82 with no blobs and scoring 35 pts than I would scoring 37 pts with a couple of blobs. Even if I can't score, I always try to hole out and return a gross score.

I always finish every hole and I generally shoot in the mid 70s and can be playing very well but there will always be the bandits who come in with plenty more points despite running up cricket scores on some holes. It has its place but from my perspective its not a favorite.

Is there a form of golf scoring in which the players deduct their handicap for a final net stroke score?

If I'm understanding you, that's medal. Count the number of shots, deduct your h'cap, that's your score.

If they're running up cricket score then they must be playing well irrespective of handicap. If they were playing that well in a Medal off the same handicap you'd still get slaughtered.

And don't forget that the Medal score only counts towards winning the competition, handicap is still based on a Stableford system.
