Do you use a Tee on a short par 3 ?

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

Jack Nicklaus said, Quote "When ever you get the chance to tee up the ball then do so" I think he knew a fair bit about the game.

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

I love the way certain players insousciantly and with marvellous nonchelance chuck their ball onto the deck on a par three - as if to say 'huh - I'm so confident with my irons that I don't have to worry that much about what I hit it off' (love? hmm - maybe not :smirk:)

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

Greig, if it makes you feel any better I used to do that to show off when I was about 16.
Would never have dreamed about doing it in a tournament though!!

Good for you. I don't really need to feel better about myself though, I play my game my way and do what works for me.
I don't do it to show off (as I don't really have much to show off about). I do it purely because it feels more natural to me to hit my irons off grass as I wouldn't tee up anywhere else, regardless of the lie I find myself in (fairway not always perfect either).
The way I see it the more practice I get at hitting my irons off the deck the better.

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

Will tee it up all the way down to a wedge 90% of time.

Only time that I wont is if I'm trying to hit a low one with less stop with a 7-9 iron.

Will always tee up 6 iron down.

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

I always use a tee to give me that perfect lie I would otherwise only get on those few fairways/tees I have played that really were perfect - and in practice I can't think of any tees that were that good either! Fairways yes, but not tees. Loch Lomond and The Wisley being close....

Have to agree that over the years it's been the cat 1 / want to be tour players that wouldn't be seen using a tee, but by the time they are on the feeder tours most are using them again - main tour and it's close to 100%. Funny old world isn't it :)

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

So you use your short hole tee shots to practice for your fairway shots......that's weird.

Short hole tee shot? Fairway shot? Surely a 173 yard shot in to a green is a 173 yard shot in to a green? I don't see any differential. The plan is still to hit is to the pin from 173 yards and get it as close as possible.
Maybe I use my fairway shots to practice my short hole tee shots...

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

if you are using your hands to place the ball on the ground then you should be able to find the "perfect lie". otherwise pick it up and put it on a different spot.

i rarely use tees on par 3's. if im hitting an iron then 9/10 i wont use a tee. ive hit a few hybrids off the ground on par 3's too.

do whats comfy for you, but what if you tried it and it was a game changer

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

On the course i would tee up ( red castle ) always

Im the same... Its funny when I first started I used yellow for anything (didn't use a driver) Then moved to blue because Yellow was way too high and now its only red for all irons.

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

, but what if you tried it and it was a game changer

I have tried it aswell & still do it the odd time if the tee box isnt great, but like Greig i prefer to hit it off the ground , i practice (ha ha yeah right) my irons off the ground for hitting off the fairway & what is a tee box but a nice bit of manicured fairway (usualy)

Surely in a round of golf you would be hitting alot more irons off the ground than off tees ? if you can hit it from the ground from a fairway , why would you tee it up on the tee box ?

I can hear the "because you can" answers ha ha .. its like most things in golf , if it suits you & its within the rules , fill your boots

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

I do use a tee for PW and above but have it barely sticking out of the ground. I have played a nine hole course with holes ranging from 80-150 yards before and didn't use tees and must admit it was the best tee (without a tee) shots I've ever hit so I don't think it really matters.

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

Off grass I'll always tee up if I'm using an iron down to the wedge-not much, but enough to make sure of getting to the bottom of the ball without a lump of grass getting in the way.
Off Winter mats I only tee up a 5 or 4 iron, the rest I play from the mat.

I suggest that many people don't hit irons from the tee at the range mats is because there isn't a tee small enough -I rarely hit 4 irons off the tee at the range as the ball feels about a foot in the air...

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

I have tried everything - tee it up off the ground, tee it low as possible and off the ground.

the problem with putting a full tee all the way into the ground to get a perfect lie was getting the bugger out again.

I now use broken bits of tees, as I get the same result - a tiny tee head in the ground and then dont worry about retrieving it.

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

On our 2 longer par 3's (206yds + 191yds) I'll use a red castle, on our 2 uphill and raised par 3 greens (142yds + 155yds) I'll sit the ball on the head of a broken tee just sitting proud and on our level 140yds par its off the turf.

Re: Do you use a Tee on a short part 3 ?

As I do not tee the ball up too high with my driver [10.5] I use the broken tree trunks that seem to survive one hit for my drives and the shorter ones for my irons. Never have to buy tees now.
