Do you use a Tee on a short par 3 ?

So for 5 irons down to my PW, I tend to drop the ball down and just hit it off the turf. Most of my playing partners tee the ball up slightly.

If its a long Par3 and I'm using 4,3 or 3 wood, then I'll tee it up just a bit.

What do you do?

In my head I'll get more back spin hitting it off the deck, not sure thats true though. Any pro or cons you can think of?

I don't tend to tee it up on any par 3. If it's 173 yards, for example, then that's my 5 iron - I wouldn't tee it up if I was 173 yards out on the fairway so why should I on a tee box?
I've never really understood teeing up on a par 3 to be honest.

i always use a tee (at the very lowest point). jack nicklaus said along the lines 'it gives the perfect lie every time'

i find most tees on courses are differnt from the fairways so i prefer teeing it up

Tee it up - not much though probably not much more than a preferred lie!

Used to play with a 2 handicapper who would tee up the best part of an inch for a short iron!

Always tee it up whenever legally possible. Whats the point having a decent lie when you can have a perfect one? :)

For me it rather depends upn the state of the teeing ground - 173 yds out would I rather my ball was sitting pretty on top of nicely mown fairway or sitting down in a tight lie? I know my answer. When I use a tee peg on a par three I will however tee it well down as I don't like the look of the ball 'hovering' above the turf. I don't kid myself that I'm good or consistent enough with my irons to play a tee shot at a par three as if it were an approach shot (which it is I know - but mentally I've never been able to get myself thinking that way). And even then it depends on the flight I want to hit - low draw againt a wind - probably no tee. Gentle lofted fade - maybe tee it up.

Ok, so not wanting to hijack the thread but a genuine question to those that tee up. When practicing your iron shots at the range or practice ground (including 8,9 and wedges) do you practice tee shots? If not, why not if you use them out on the course?

At the range, i never hit an iron off a tee.

When i said i use a tee on par 3's. literally the ball is at the same height as it would be on grass, just i know 100% it has a perfect lie. I don't "tee it up" for longer irons either, all are hit from the deck height, but on a clean platform..

Hope that makes sense..

Hey stop hijacking my thread damn you ;)

I might have to give it a try but will only tee it up by a fraction of an inch.

On the course i would tee up ( red castle ) always

At the range all irons i use off the mat and never Tee so i can judge how the strike is off the mat

You can also see mat marks as a guide to the swing path !

Good question. I'll always hit off the floor at a range when using my irons, but on a short part 3 I will tee it up ever so slightly (I use the short, stubby orange tees). The lie off of the mats at the driving range is just one step below the lie you'd get if you tee'd your ball up a tiny bit on the course in my opinion.

Anything I can do to improve my chances of a good contact with the ball, I'll do it :)
