Do you regret it?

Regret not taking it up earlier as I was 43 when I did and still am now (untill a fortnight) golf courses all around me but never fancied it until a few good mates did and I was left out. I'm now the keenest golfer in the crowd.

I just retired from playing ball before christmas bob and started playing golf last may..Im 35 now..
I have 2 young kids so ill get back to you in about 20 years again :D :D ;)

I had a 17 year break away from the game for all the common reasons stated by bobmac, just started playing again last summer and got my handicap of 19 (previous best was 13)

As far as what my handicap would have been...who knows. Just last week I had a look at the handicap list on howdidido from my old club out of noseyness.

Not very scientific probably but I picked 30 guys I used to play with regularly and whose handicap I knew from 17 years ago. Comparing the handicaps then and now I found:

3 were 2 or more shots lower

7 were within 1 shot of where they were

9 were up to 5 shots higher

11 were more than 5 shots higher :D

These aren't by any manner old men, their ages now will be between 40 and 50.

My Dad thought me how to play when i was 14/15 but I only played anyway serious when I was 20/21. That lasted about a year and then played socially till about 18 months ago when got serious about it again. Am 34 now feel I did 'waste' a good few years. Am more mature now and my handicap is the lowest it has ever been.

Would love to get to Cat 1 before 40 but will think, family and work will get in the way of that !!

Yes I do.

My first ever handicap at about age 20 was 16, I quickly got down to 13. Gave up the game for 10 yrs or more and when I first started back couldnt hit a thing. After 18 mths or so got down lower than I have ever been so wonder how good I would have been if I stuck at it. Mind you, I am making up for those lost years, playing before work, after work, weekends, bring on Summer!!

Yes, regret it massive time.

Got down to handicap 11, aged 13, won a few mens comps then lost interest. Played in junior comps but it was just a bit of a laugh, no interest in mens comps.

Stayed around 11 until I was 17/18, had to get summer jobs then away to uni. Played the odd round at home in the holidays but hardly anything.

Played a round in Kashmir while travelling and loved it again, the ball flies miles at that altitude (!), and vowed to take it up again when I returned to the UK. Got home and my home course was in horrendous condition, so I didn't bother.

Moved to the south west aged 26 and have been slowly getting back into it. Loving it lots, it's just finding the time to play now.

So yeah - really wish I had stuck at it. Had a fair bit of natural ability, unlikely I could have been good enough to be a touring pro, but teaching pro well within my grasp.

It's all about what could have been...

Nah, don't regret it.

Made a very good 2nd income from playing football between the ages of 15 and 36 and like most "footballers" golf was seen as the obligatory pass time.

I would like to be a youngster with a bit of talent getting into any sport now. The opportunities, facilities, coaching, awareness and nearly every facet that surrounds good young sports(wo)men is infinately better than when I went through that stage.

Lucky little bleeders don't know were born!! :D

My dad used to take me playing quite often when I was probably 8 or 9, but never to the point where I could've got a handicap, and I never got close to challenging him. Picked up some clubs when I was maybe 32 and had a couple of games with a mate, but it never came to anything. Tried again a few years ago, (age 36), and joined a club and got a handicap, (16), had a couple of lessons, and it's gone downhill ever since.

If I didn't work I think I'd be off single figures, so my regret is not being rich enough to not have to work.
