Correct, but sometimes its worth throwing a forthright view in to see what comes out in the wash.:D

However, and as tony said, there are too many times/people who when you are looking for their ball just say that they are playing a Titleist or a Srixon, and dont even know what number is on it. Ive sometimes even said "theres a Srixon 2 here"......they normally say yes thats it, funny to see their face when its actually a Srixon 4.

To me the rule SHOULD be that you have to mark your ball, as it CAN give cheats free licence, although as you said its not within the rules that you have to.

I agree with LB that it should be a rule, as it eases any confusion that may occur when playing a provisional ball. Also, I actually always put my initials on as 3 dots, or a dot next to the number is all to common. In my early golfing days I almost lost a ball in a medal because someone else was playing a titleist with 3 red dots !

Always ! and I agree with LB in that it should be a rule in order to avoid any confusion with provisional balls, searching for balls etc. I also always put my initials on mine after someone incorrectly played my titleist with three red dots on in my early golfing days.

I try to remember to declare the ball and it's markings - however, I'm sure I don't always, so have said no - although it's best practice to do so

Final comment on this thread.....

If messing about with mates, really don't care if they declare their ball on the tee as a lost ball will generally result in just dropping another and playing out the hole etc.

In a competition there is a simple and quick procedure on the 1st tee. Mark and identify your ball to your playing partners, exchange scorecards, wish them the best of luck and off you go.

If anyone chooses not to do this then that is up to them but I always follow the above.

Best to announce I agree.

Those claiming not to know what balls their partners are playing must not be paying as much attention as I do.

Even if they are not announced I generally walk past balls on the fairway or see them on every green.

"That's yours over there john" etc, is said pretty much every hole.

I always announce my ball in a comp as do the other people I play with. Then if somebody has the same make and number, we can then make sure that they are either changed or there are other identifying marks to differentiate the balls. It's not in the rules but I consider it to be good etiquette.
In a bounce game with the mates we don't tend to bother as it's just a fun game for a couple of quid.
Saying that my golf ball is a yellow Callaway with eyes drawn on so mine tends to be pretty identifiable.

I always mark my ball with three green dots in a triangular pattern and will declare the make and markings on the 1st tee. It avoids the chance of any confusion.
I'd love to be in a fourball where everybody is playing a Titleist 4.
......

All on 1st tee box

Player A: I’ll be playing a pro-v with three red dots
Player B: I have a pro-v with two red dots above the logo
Player C: mine’s a pro-v with three black dots two above and one below the logo
Player D: pro-v for me too with three dots one red one black one blue

All: Play well guys (everyone looking confused)

Player A goes into rough on first hole and needs help finding it

Group gets to area of 'lost' ball
Players B,C,D: Hey Player A, what are you playing again?

Hey Player A, here's your ball ("clever me remembering what he told us on the first tee")

Fixed it for you, ;)

We can all make stories up to prove our point.

Do what you like, nobody ever died because they did or did not tell their playing partners what ball they were using on the 1st Tee.

I don't particularly take note of what the others tell me they are playing with other than to make sure the make and markings are not the same as mine. After that it comes down to golfers self policing and being honest about finding their own ball. I've blanked out and forgotten their ball after the point of checking it is not the same as mine.

Oo, you lying hound.

You claimed a Pro-staff 842A with a Liver bird holding a shamrock on it at Murcar, as yours!

And it was sitting up!:D

Bang on.

Correct - Its not a rule of golf.

Good etiquette - I think so, yes.

When playing with mates, I do, but don't necessarily expect them to.

When in a comp, as above. That said, the amount of times I do, and people also then do the same is pretty much 95%.

(Us low guys normally tee off first, so this happens a lot).Maybe this lack of etiquette is due to high handicappers playing off the 1st tee first and out of turn in comps - should know their place.

No not at all but if left to some people it seems that golf would degenerate into a game played by cheats wearing jeans and football tops who mark their ball on the green with a can of beer
Oh COME ON!! Can we please just stop being lazy and making stuff up!!

No one, and I mean no one on this forum has EVER indicated that golf is going in that direction. You cant simply make stuff up to imply it's the reaction to someone not doing as YOU wish. It makes a mockery of your actual stance and other things you might say which are valid.

Would you stop now please? Sensible suggestions only. Thanks!

More fool you for taking a flippant reply so literally.
