I found a sleeve of Pro V1's that I purchased 8 years ago. I was just wondering if golf balls actually have any sort of 'use by' date. I assume over time they may start to degrade but didn't know how long that would take.

the old wound with 'elastic bands' balls certainly degraded but I think todays balls will be fine for a good while yet. Master Luke plays with a Prov1 thats about 6 years old I believe

yes is the answer, according to a EU DIRECTIVE NO.3167/908C golf balls must have a sell by date and use by date on the box, this states that anyone above 18 h/c must buy a sleeve prior to commencing your round and use all 3 before your round ends, old cut balls found in the rough, trees,or in water do not count and if you haven't lost all 3 by the end off play your not playing to your h/c and are deemed to be a bandit.

Yes they do. It is a little known fact but every golf ball contains only 1 birdie/eagle/albatross but NUMEROUS 3 putts. That's why all smart players change their ball after a birdie. However, it is pointless changing it after a 3 putt as the next ball also has an unlimited number of them in it's composition. Not many people know these facts.

I should write a book about this, could make a fortune.............

I have had 3 birdies in a round with a ball once
Also had a birdie and an eagle within the space of 3 holes with the same ball

I also played with a guy who birdied 3 of the first 4 holes with the same ball! One was holed out of a bunker!

Sounds like you need rip up you cards for those rounds. Those balls obviously didn't comply with R&A/USGA rules. They were overstocked with birdies and probably made using unicorn horn which is an illegal ingredient. Odyssey released a new putter a while back with a rabbits foot insert. It was soon deemed illegal. But if you can get hold of one with those balls you can shoot -10 under even with a triple bogey on a hole.
