We had the AGM of our match and handicap committee this afternoon and I was lucky enough to get voted back onto the committee. A point raised by a member was that he felt he was subsidising better players prizes as we dont have categories for prizes but instead, for example we have 3 gross and 5 nett prizes, as opposed to prizes for nett and gross in the 0-10, 11-19 and 20+ plus categories. I'm of the opinion that the best score on the day should win be your handicap 0 or 28. What do you guys do at your clubs?

The vast majority of our comps are in 3 divisions as you described you don't do. Our lowest gross and 1st/2nd/3rd prizes are what we do in board comps.

Personally I don't care how the prizes are split. I love playing and if I shoot a great score and someone beats me, well played to them.

As beggsy says. However we also recognise best scratch every week on the bottom of the results sheet! No prize money for it though.

We have divisions for the weekly and monthly medals and stablefords. Usually split into three unless its a small field and then its usually 0-14 and 15+. For honours board events and pairs comps we have prizes for top 4

Lowest Gross is always recognised in each division but, as above, no prize for it.
All comps, bar Club Championship, are handicap comps as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for the replies guys. I imagine that this will be discussed again and possibly voted on before our season starts so I just wanted to get an idea of what other clubs do.

We vary prizes depending on the comp.

Standard monthly comps (medals and stablefords) see cat 1 & 2 and then cat 3 & 4 being lumped together for 1st - 3rd. Vouchers for the pro-shop. President's Bowl (3/4 stabledford) sees everyone together for 1st to 3rd.

We have a lowest gross prize which I believe is similar to the first prize for the comp. We do not play many comps in divisions (not a big enough entry to warrant the number of prizes, so the lowest gross is the only prize that the really low handicappers have a chance of winning. There is always at least one handicap golfer that shoots 4-6 shots under handicap which the low single figure golfers cannot compete with. If it were not for a decent lowest gross prize I suspect that the low single figure members would not even bother entering.
