Now I've a theory that how far & well people hit their clubs, have at least in some cases very little to do with that players handicap.

For distances I am the same as Cernunnos, but my handicap is 11 (til Saturday at least).

Why would distances effect handicap ever?

Consistency is the key, along with temper, bottle, and course management.

Currently putting is my problem, which I have never had a problem with before. There is always something.

My other theory & its almost a supersticious one, is that as soon as you've started to solve one problem, another rears its ugly head & as often as not it usually ends up being something that is normally the least likely to cause a problem.

Hence why my putting has suddenly gone south again, even though putting is normally a skill I pride myself on. hey-ho.

Oh & Murph, I think you are spot on as regards bottle & course management. When playing a quite testing & long course near Gloucester in a works doo, I set my 83, by thinking my way round & being confident about my general game. Ironically I know even then I could have saved even more shots than I did even that day. Or even last year when I set a great score on the Old course at Nefyn, last October of similar magnitude to September at Gloucester.

My best is 75 round a par 72 (my home track), off the blocks, in horizontal rain, with 3 complete strangers, who must have doubted my 12 h/cap.

I have parred both the front 9, and the back 9 many times, but never in the same round.

On saturday I had the usual game of two halves, 2 over going out, 10 over coming back. Sounds like a choker, but I started on 14, so the rubbish was at both ends of the back 9, and the good stuff in the middle. This was the start of my putting woes.

I'm with Murph for distances and handicap and the consistency part too.

Hitting it a long way is no good if you can't get the ball in the hole.

Best ever round?

Gross 69 off the whites on a par 71 about 8 years ago - got the handicap slashed so far I thought I was going to bleed. it was just one of those days when everything went right. A few years previously at the same club when it was a 9 holer I shot 4 birdies to 4 bogeys for a level par 68 - my lowest.

Be nice if I could do it now........

I assume the 350+ is at altitude and downhill, as otherwise this is outrageous.

I have a friend who I out drive regularly whose max is 450, but that was not in normal conditions.

My distances

Driver - minus 2 yards ( teed up too high, popped up in the air, landed 2 yards behind me) to 80 miles ( in coal wagon of 17:53 freight train to Carlisle)

....and so on and so forth....

60 degree wedge 2 yards (duffed chip) to 150 yards (full tilt swing skulled through the back of the green)

Please notes that these distances exclude ricochets off fixed objects or interference by outside agencies (Bloody foxes!)

I think I may have some consistency issues. :D

Craig, when I drove off and hit the ladies tee markers, my record shortest drive is 40 yards ob backwards, involving my entire 4 ball having to hit the deck to avoid decapitation.

Funny? Not for me at the time (it was medal).

My shortest shot ever would have been about 150 yards behind me on the adjacent fairway if it hadn't have struck some unsuspecting old fella on the practice ground. He limited the negative distance to about 30 yards. Result!

That reminds me, I really must look into golf insurance.........

Distance depends on weather conditions played last Sat and hit 3 iron off all the Par 3 tees which varied in distance from 150---195 yds. Wind was blowing in all directions except following. On a normal gentle breeze day my distances excluding knockdowns or bladed wedges are roughly:

Driver distance 260/270 yds
5 wood up to 200 yds
3 iron up to 180 yds
4 iron up to 170 yds
5 iron up to 160 yds
6 iron up to 150 yds
7 iron up to 140 yds
8 iron up to 130 yds
9 iron up to 120 yds
P Wedge 100---110 yds
S Wedge 90---100 yds
54 Degree W 75 yds

Currently play off 19.

Interestingly i have played with a number of players with handicaps from 24-28 who drove well but found it difficult to pitch and putt and/or had problems with course management.
