Distance or dispersion...that's the question?

Recently went for a club try out....Ping i E3 irons vs TM Psi's.

The TM went a bit further (5 yds or so) but the Pings had a closer dispersion to the shots on Trackman.

AG recommended I go with the Ping's as they had a 'better' dispersion. So I did.

Did i make the right decision? :mmm:

If the distance gain was only minimal, I'd go with the better dispersion personally.

Better dispersion for me, I'd sacrifice a nominal bit of distance for accuracy.

As far as I'm concerned, dispersion comes before distance when it comes to irons.
The bulk of your iron shots are into greens
The closer you get to the hole, the better you will score.
It doesn't matter if you need to hit a 6 or a 7 to get there but it matters if you're 5 yards away or 20...

Imagine the shot was at the flag. If you're tighter to the flag, you'll score better. Unless you're talking about 2 clubs difference in distance, dispersion every time.

Well scoring has definitely improved....80, 79, 78, 77 the last four rounds....

When I got them took me a few goes on the range to get used to the timing on the different shafts. And then I was popping them up a bit too high so got them re-lofted at 1 degree stronger. Since i've been playing with them handicap down from 10.7 to 9.1....

What club number(s) were you given to try? The TM clubs probably had more jacked down lofts to give more (perceived) distance for a given club number! Think you made the right decision, so just take one more club with the Pings.

If it's a club distance then it would depend if you were more accurate with the ping 6 iron over the TM 7.

Surly dispersion is down to if you can put a consistent swing on it, which i'm guessing most amateur golfers can't?

I think you chose wisely. Accuracy is king. The more fairways and greens you can find in regulation the better your scores will be.
