Distance or dispersion...that's the question?

Sorry if this is silly question but when ever there is a discussion on this driver or irons that are being tried the question of dispersion puzzles because if I go to a fitting or the range to try a club surely the dispersion left to right is down to me more than the club, so are we talking about long to short dispersion?

If I'm 145 to the centre of a green I have one go at getting there not the 10 ~ 20 at the range so I would want to be confident that the club I select with a decent swing will get me there Plus/minus my capability which in my case would be 15 yards. The left and right is down to my alignment, my swing path and the other variables that struggle to control because I'm an amateur.

So when I try a new club and the fitter says your dispersion is better with club X is that not going to be the case because I pick a ball and position it the line up to the same target and re-create the same swing as the previous shot, therefore if I have reasonable handicap would I note expect the dispersion the good. I understand if I was using a Steel shaft then tried a graphite shaft initially i might see a difference once i have repeated a few swings one to another would I not expect a similar dispersion?

My experience was measured on trackman. I hit quite a few balls alternating from one club to the other, and varying the amount i hit with each stint. Even taking a rest for a few minutes after a stint and then starting with a different club. So i tried to be as random an unbiased as possible in determining the right club to get as i really didn't care which ones i would end up with.

I was talking about side to side. They measure the side spin on the ball so doesn't really matter where you are aiming.

If you hit enough balls then the average dispersion has got to mean something surely? And of course it could be anything even the swing but then if a club aids you to put less side spin on the ball (for whatever reason) that's good...right?

Anyway...it seems to have worked out...whether that's luck or judgment you decide!

I don't think 'average' is any good at all when talking about dispersion.

I could hit 25 balls that finish 20yds right and 25 balls that finish 20yds left and my average will be 0.

If you're happy with the decision you made the right one, I doubt there was enough difference in the stats to say one club is better than the other, and I doubt the sample size was big enough to be of any real meaning.

When I tried out some irons at AG the trackman confirmed what I felt when hitting the ball, in that I felt more in control with one club over the others and this was confirmed when the dispersion was less with the one I preferred. There was little in it from a distance point of view.

I agree with most on here, ie accuracy is more important that a few extra yards.

Dispersion for me, hitting fairways is the key as it makes the game a whole lot easier, mind you in the winter it's not a problem as most course play a lot shorter & there is not a lot of rough about

Surely it is dispersion versus distance travelled rather than iron number, ie. at the same distance say 150 yards (don't care what number iron you hit), what one has the dispersion better?

It sounds like the dispersion with the same distance is better, then the choice is easy its the pings you bought.
