When is enough enough in terms of ball usage (yes, yes, get the laughs over with now!)?

Would you continue to play a good quality ball, even if it is covered in grazes or scratches? Or is it more of a superstitious act?

Thoughts?

Once a ball gets badly scuffed up its off to the practice bag with it. I wouldnt say superstitious but I dont think a scuffed up ball will perform as well.

good summary

look at the effect that shiny one side, scuffy the other (not deliberately of course) can have on a cricket ball in flight...

I play with a ProV1x. They tend to go a fair shade of beige in a short time but I try to get as much mileage out of them seeing as they cost so much. That's OK if I'm playing on my own but if I'm playing along with someone then I will get a new one out. Don't want to appear a complete pauper.

I like a nice shiny ball! I've been using my winning balls from a soc meet with golfbreaks logos on them - last one about to come out the packet. there is something nice about lining the logo up and reading it as i putt!

gosh - i need to get a life ;)

I played on my own yesterday and got to a par 3 160 yds. Hit a pinnacle to about 10 yards from the flag. Thought to myself that was good, lets see if I can do it again, took out a dirty manky titleist that nobody would ever use and hit it to about 20 yards from the flag. Thinking I'm on a roll here took another out of the bag and it was a range ball that didn't even deserve to be on the range, should have been binned years ago, hit this one exactly between the other 2 balls.
And before anyone starts moaning about stealing range balls it was one I found and was going to throw it back on the way past later on!

Tend to get two rounds out of them if I don't lose them first and consign them to the short game or practice bags
Blimey, Homer! I couldn't afford to do that! I get about 20 rounds out of one, assuming I don't lose it... which is not very often!;)

Even I coulnt play with one for 20 rounds, I'd of lost it anyway! Don't mind a few scuffs but once it's started to get little nicks etc I'll get a new one out. I really wish I didn't like these prov1x's lol!

To be honest the chances of keeping it for two rounds with the length of rough at the course at the moment is slim. I'm lucky that I have a plethora of balls from birthday/christmas presents, sweeps, raffles etc. so can afford to be a bit choosy at the moment

I think it makes a massive difference

every 3 or 4 holes off the tee my ball takes a massive swerve left or right and is never seen again - must have been badly scuffed

I try and make sure I don't damage my golf balls unnecessarily by hitting the ground behind the ball.. it cushions the blow

Other than that I just hit the thing and only replace it if it looks too shabby to putt with.

I find that after a while (anywhere between 1 and 3 rounds) a ball will get dirty easier.

That might sound weird, but dirt just wipes off a new ball with the swipe of a thumb. Eventually it seems like it gets filthy after just one shot and needs water and a cloth to clean it properly.

That's when I'll change it for a new one.

i play one make of ball, and to be honest i tend to wash them in hot soapy water when the get a bit dirty,at £40+ for a doz i want to get the longest time out of each ball, yes if it gets a nice smile on it then it goes into the bin but until then no it stays in my bag, don't forget it was only a few years ago that pro's had to buy there own golf balls and they had to pick them up after they had practiced, wash them and use them in comps. is this new fangled idea that a ball just lasts a few rounds coming from our throw away attitude to everything in life or by good advertising?
