Diego

"Yes Harry - you've mastered the diving. Now let's work on those hands"!! ?

RIP Diego.

For me, the best player to ever play the game. Not just sublimely skilful, but also capable of making an average team great.

And FWIW, a decent keeper wouldn’t have been outjumped by a guy who couldn’t muster 6ft with his hands up and stood on a box.
Further to this though, everyone calls Maradona a cheat but how have the officials got off scot-free? That must be one of the worst calls of all time, they saw a 5 foot player apparently head it over the outstretched arms of a 6 foot goalie and thought "yeah, seems legit".

It’s a good shout, but considering the political climate of the time, it was far easier to blame the tiny Argentinian “cheat”. I prefer to remember the second goal where he made a brilliant England midfield/defence look like a Sunday pub team.

I think this is it. He didn't do anything out of the ordinary, a blatant handball that loads of players have done when they had no chance to get their head to it. Free kick given and nowadays nobody would even remember or care about it. Instead the achievements of the greatest player who ever lived are being overshadowed by that split second decision.[/QUOTE

Err......what about Pele, Puskas, even, I am afraid to say, Ronaldo ?

To be fair, I think they’re only overshadowed in one country. Most everyone else remembers the utter utter flawed genius of the man. My favourite ever footballer, and I was as gutted as anyone when England were knocked out.

Well that and the cocaine abuse and drug ban for taking ephedrine.

June 2nd 1979 I was in the Rangers End at Hampden to see the new Argentinian wunderkind - some 18yr old lad called Maradona - playing for the touring 1978 World Cup winning team - Kempes et al. We could hardly make him out - but I did see him score :) Scotland lost - but memories. RIP wee man.

Flippin eck Maradona, where do you wanna start.

The hand of god goal always gets a mention, course it was a blatant handball against a world class goalie who was always slow off his line. He was hated the length and breadth of England because of what he did. Chuck in the fact that he was an argie and the wounds of the Malvinas/ Falklands islands of four years earlier were still raw. His solo goal in that same game was rightly voted the goal of last century. It’s like I said when choosing the best shot At August. When the pressure is on who can deliver. Maradona did. Ave read a comment that England tried to scythe him down whilst on that run. Really, Peter Reid was running in quicksand. The only challenge was in the box when he shot.
He was simply simply brilliant.
He had baggage, but my thoughts on him are as a player nothing else.

Rest in peace, another celebrity from my prime days gone. 2020 has been a crap in.

Don’t forget the drug taking , the bans, the fights and mass brawls he started

He was a genuis but lots of flaws both on and off the pitch

Here’s a trivia question, which English club nearly signed Maradona for £200,000.

I watched the game again a few years ago. The ref was shocking, blatantly favouring Argentina. Just before Maradona's second goal, Hoddle is chopped down right in front of the ref. It's so obvious.

Greatest player is not the same as greatest person.

But that's not what you said. Your point was that his achievements were being overshadowed by a split second decision. I was simply pointing out that there were other things overshadowing his achievements, not just the hand ball.

I remember watching it as an impressionable 12yr old and just being mesmerised by Maradona. I honestly don’t remember the reffing.

No doubt the full game will be on TV soon so I’ll watch it and pay more attention to the ref ???
