Diego

If he was before your time then you will not have the mental scars that come with that game or tournament. England had a genuinely good team, had a real chance of winning. It doesn't matter what others have done before or since, that hurt. Ask an Irishman, who saw the game, in 30 years what they think of Henry and the wounds will still be there.

Back to the player. Aspects of his game were sublime. At a time when players got kicked all over, particularly in Italy, his dribbling was something else. The other sides of him, on and off the pitch, are for another time really.

The 82 World Cup game against Italy was surely a landmark game in his career. Got kicked to bits by the ironically named Gentile in what these days would be akin to GBH on the pitch. One wonders what that sort of unpunished treatment does to a player.

Closely followed of course by the Butcher of Bilbao, Andoni Goikotxeoia.

His calves must have been a site to behold ?. Italian defenders of that era were plain nasty and what they got away with was crazy. Saying that, Argentinian defenders were of the same ilk so his team dished it out as well. That didn't help the back of his legs though.

I’m not denying it will have left people still bitter. I hate Harry Redknapp irrationally. people, can even use it as a reason to rate Messi, pele, Ronaldo higher. Totally fine with that. But whilst the handball is iconic (at least for English) I just don’t see the disgust at it when we All probably idolise players that have cheated.

Outside of England I doubt anyone else even remembers it. It is a parochial moan. The key though is the timing of it, the situation. In a group game, a friendly etc it would have been forgotten but it was a QF of a world cup when we had a real chance to win the tournament.

It was the situation, the occasion that brings the baggage with it.

There was a great documentary, perhaps on Sky titled Football’s greatest. It showed what was though of him in Napoli, well worth a watch

Probably the greatest footballer ever. Cheat? You'd have to be very naive to think that sports folk wouldn't 'try to get away with something' if it was to benefit of their Nation.... there's certainly plenty of examples.... doesn't excuse it but it's understandable.
His 2nd goal in that game was a thing of beauty as there were several attempts to hack him down. He was appreciated by followers of 'The beautiful game' rather than flag-wavers.

Ah yes, the infamous England handball cheat.

I assume you are all referring to Paul Scholes, who punched the ball into the net against Poland? I remember how the commentators said nothing at all because it was an England player, shameful.

And just to prove it wasn't a one off aberration he did it again for Man U, but the ref spotted it and he was sent off.

Funny how nobody mentions these incidents when they are more recent than Maradona's

Sadly, football is full of cheating and it's only outrageous when your team is the victim.

Ha, I didn't remember either of those. Do you think Polish and Russian forums will be calling him a cheat the day he dies?

RIP Diego.

For me, the best player to ever play the game. Not just sublimely skilful, but also capable of making an average team great.

And FWIW, a decent keeper wouldn’t have been outjumped by a guy who couldn’t muster 6ft with his hands up and stood on a box.

Are you seriously suggesting that Peter Shilton wasn't a "decent keeper"?
