My partner and I were playing for our Club in a match with a nearby club. We were 4 up and playing the 11'th, one of the opponents and I were both playing from the upslope of a hazard, I played 1st being careful to observe the rules. The other guy took 4 practice swings and then grounded his club before playing. I had a brief chat with my partner and we agreed, as the match was a friendly between the two clubs to turn a blind eye as we halved the hole, and I mentioned to him very quietly as we walked to the next tee what he had done. We won 5 and 4 - what would you have done?

As it was a friendly i think you did the right thing and let it go but if it was a competitive match with something at stake i would've penalised him. How did he react when you told him?

I would have called it in a competitive match too Scobie. I did it as nice as it could be said, and he apologised, no problem at all. His partner never heard anything but he had been a bit of a ****head so I didnt want him involved

Nice that everyone is of a like mind, so far!

How do you define grounding?

Swishing the grass with the club 4 times in the hazard, then laying the club behind the ball and on the ground, before executing the shot.

Think you got it spot on although like others if it had been in a competitive match (inter-club knockout etc) or a monthly medal/stableford I'd have penalised him. It would have been interesting to see what this guys partner had said especially if he was being a bit of a fool anyway

Yeah think you did the right thing. Friendly match and your clearly in the lead.... Quiet word should do it.

Curiously if you were 2 down would you penalise him... Not sure what I'd do to be honest...???? :D

I think that I would have done the same thing as it was pretty obvious that he didn't "cheat" he clearly didn't know the rule - it does beg the question how he was off 15 and playing in club matches though?

Thats why we didnt tell him. His partner was a bit narked because we played so well and he disputed my partner who halved a hole in 5, saying he got 6, we proved it was 5 and then he told his partner that he wouldn't have conceded the putt for half if he had known it was for a half. It was about 12 inches and shorter than one we gave the hole before for half. He later was unhappy that he conceded a putt to my partner on the same hole as the other matter and my partner still knocked it in - I told him that my partner had a hearing aid and maybe didn't hear the concession and his answer was " he should have looked round to see if we gave it"!!You can tell why I didn't talk about the other matter
