Declaring make and model of ball

Well, an opponent or FC may well say that the only ball you found was your provisional.

look the game is full off cheats , rules myths and golfers who don't have the first clue about basic rules like water hazards. so lay off eh. I and many others don't announce what ball we're using and I can't remember it ever causing a problem.

Which is why I specifically used the word 'should'

6-5. Ball
The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball.

Sorry I misunderstood the way you worded it.

Re the provisional issue - I never put the same number down there and announce to my playing partners which is which before I hit the provisional.

Marking the ball is a funny one. I'm not a fan of dots etc. Last 3 digits of your postcode is a good 1 I've seen. In serious comps we're required to put our ball marking on our scorecards especially when playing in a fourball.

Surely if it's a competition it's just good courtesy to mark your ball for identification. Regardless of the magnitude it makes things better for everybody - a bit like not being a lane hogger or indicating when driving.

Dont see the point, its not a piece of info i'd find useful and would be unlikely to be able to remember who said what on the tee.

I read a story about 2 assistant pros who went out to play a few holes after locking up the shop one evening. The first hole at the course was an uphill par 3 where you could not see the bottom of the flag. Both guys hit their shots absolutely bang on line for the pin. When they got up there one ball was a couple of inches from the hole and the other was in the hole. When they had a look, both were playing brand new identical balls without an identifying mark on either ball.

You do whatever you want paddy

Out of habit, I stand on the first tee and say "I'm playing a Taylormade/Titleist number whatever with blacked out numbers. Play well guys"

No big deal and a courtesy to others. I really cannot understand why people have an issue with simple things like this.

Me neither, but it seems many of you of seem to have areal hang up with the many who dont declare make and model etc.

No I don't think those that do it have a hang up as we are able to identify our ball so won't incur any unnecessary penalty strokes.

I wonder if those that don't mark their ball also 'forget' to declare when playing a provisional.

...

I can only assume Paddy that some people play with new balls and dont mark them..... having read all 56 posts on this subject I'm in your court. I dont tell people what ball I'm playing, nor do I expect them to tell me.

Mines the one with 4 red dots to the upper right of the logo.

Matters not. If your ball is buried in deep rough 50 yards off the tee and is found and you have the brass neck to deny it's yours, you can walk back to the tee and stripe one down the middle.

played today in a nine holer, PP smashed his drive on a dogleg right. It looked iffy, he played a provisional and said what the previous ball was and what his provisional was. Proceeded to smash it within 20 ft of his first ball. Both were found.
continued playing the hole and when he putted put, he stopped, swore at himself and said " I finished the hole with my provisional". Doh.
He told us his balls, no one got upset, he told us so we knew what we were looking for. Any found balls we pocketed.
He called the foul on himself as we did not check what ball he was playing with.
I told him that his credibility has gone through the roof coz he called the foul on himself. Cannot understand why you would not want to declare what ball you play.
