PLEASE don't turn this thread into a "is custom fitting important / a waste of money" debate.

I just want to know if anyone has went for a custom fitting for clubs and / or shaft and AFTER TAKING THE CLUB(s) HOME found that their distances had indeed increased and/or found their scores dropping immediately?

added 25-30 yards carry to my driver and started hitting fairways with it (as opposed to aiming up the LHS and ending up in the RHS semi rough...)
added 15-20 yards carry to my 3-wood, accuracy much the same.

distances provided by trackman during fitting have proved accurate on the course.

not so much a significant drop after getting my irons fitted at the end of 2012. knocked a couple of strokes off my scoring average last season versus the previous year, but no idea how resonsible the irons were or whether i was just mentally in a better place. reached my lowest ever exact handicap too. looking forward to cutting that down a bit more with the new metals in my bag this summer.

Gained some distance when I went for my iron fitting but the main thing was consistency in the ball flight, I put this dwon to the clubs being set up better for me which in turn lead to better fundamentals like posture/ set up etc. As for scores dropping immediately then no chance:) as it meant me learning all my yardedges from scratch again.

With my Driver I did, and my 3 wood, but that had less loft as well as a fancy shaft.
Other clubs have been chosen to fit gaps or to give correct lie, so I haven't always had significant distance gain.
But my 9.5 Callaway FT-5 (Fujikura stiff shaft) certainly went less far than my R11 does now.

Certainly more confidence, so hit it harder/further! That was Driver shaft fitting. But the Loft/Lie check/adjust made a huge difference. They were 'wrong for me' and I hated 1 particular club - typically the one that was right for most distances! That club became my favourite!

Yes distance was gained, dunno how much. But the major thing was learning what was suitable and what I could make work, making it possible for me to specify or look at off the shelf options.
the one thing I will say is this every shaft manufacturer will make a shaft suitable for you, the price point is your choice, I usually look at medium as quality should be good. The fitter should give you a list of shafts or suggest shafts that would be suitable, you don't need to spend crazy money.

I had significant differences. I gained distance, had more control over my ball flight and hit them far more consistent. I changed from an TTDG S400 to an X100. In the fitting I tried the project X and the KBS tour X-stiff also. The difference between the 3 shafts was noticeable.

I had two fitting last year one for Irons and one woods.

The irons i gained maybe 10 yards per club, but that was going from Muscle MP 62 to GI JPXpro with stronger lofts. Same shafts

The woods i went from Mizuno MP 630 driver and 3 wood to Callaway Xhot Pro and gained about 15 yards carry,Prolaunch red stiff in the Mizuno to project X6.0 in the Callaway.

The woods were the best preformer out of, TM, Cobra,Titeist, Ping, Cally RazX,Adams.

The irons Callaway X hot and Ping i20 went the furthest, but i just didn't like the feel, plus i got to try a set of theJPX for a week. Like the feel off the hit still, just not the look.

Sounds like a good fitting service!

In a word, yes.

One bad fit pushed scores and distance the wrong way.

Then cured it by having a proper National fit. Scores, distance, strike and confidence are way better than ever before.

I am a believer in getting fitted. That should certainly include selection of the most suitable shaft (including flex, weight etc), but it doesn't necessarily mean a super exotic shaft handcrafted by Samurai craftsmen from unobtanium. There are loads of great shafts available at sensible money and many OEMs now have pretty good lists of custom shafts available (at varying degrees of upcharge, but possibly standard price).

There is rarely only one shaft that will do, and unless you are such a consistent player that 100rpm or 0.5 degree launch matters, you can probably get something decent at most budgets.

One of my early fits was for a Titleist 909D3, and that came with a Matrix Code 6 shaft. I love that shaft and still have the club, although I also have a more modern Titleist 913D3. It definitely helped my game and gave me more distance and better consistency.

The fitting process for the 913 at St Ives (thanks, GM) was also very interesting and there was a clear difference between shafts, some of which resulted in low hooks and others which gave a nice medium flight with even a smidgen of fade. I have one of the latter now, an Oban Devotion.

I love your golf swing! You do this waggle which looks like you want to take the club away inside, then actually go outside and then hit from the inside, then BOOM!

LOL! Forgot about the swing vids in the signature!

Used to be far more outside the line and then over the top, leading to slice after slice - Jim Furyk like! The bad fit did this, looking back, as I was trying to smash the ball to recover lost distance, when in fact the shafts were super spinning the ball. Bad habits engrained...

...then in 2012, got the right fit and changed swing a bit - made a strong effort to takeway better and hit inside and that's what you see there. Today, it's similar but less pronounced (I think!).

I got plenty of distance from my G25's over the TM Tour Preferreds but that was probably down to the cranked lofts. I do think there is merit in getting the right shaft for your swing and speed. The shaft is the engine room so finding the right one can make a difference. I don't know whether a full C/F is always necessary but if you can get to play with a few models (TT, KBS etc) and see how they perform it gives you options and an idea what works

Yes for me.

Went from a whippy regular K15 driver to a Project X 6.0 shaft in the X Hot driver and dispersion improved noticeably. Still getting used to it as no custom for resolves and awful swing but getting there. Can't wait for dry solid fairways to see how far this baby goes! 400 yards, naturally.

I've noticed you have a R1. I bought one recently with a regular 55g shaft and found I was hooking the ball and missing the middle on the first outing. I know my swing speed, ball flight and I'm pretty much in tune with my swing and having done a lot of research, I have a good idea of what shaft profile suits me.

I picked up a Mizayaki JDL on Ebay for £30 and put a R1 adaptor on and it has transformed the driver and my accuracy. You can pick up TM TP shafts for about £40 however if you don't know what profile shaft you need it's best to go for a fitting with somebody who has a number of shafts you can try. Some retailers will even sell you demo shafts.

what do you think is the most important part of the custom fit? surely it has to be the lie angle.

I have a set of mizuno mp 52 which are 2 upright. I got a set of titleist mb's which are flat, not sure by how much but the difference is staggering. divots are a little shallower and how do I describe this, a better form. they seem to be the width of the blade.

using those titleist irons I have been able to hit the mid and shorter irons straighter than I ever have it my life. I don't think the flat longer irons suit as well though as I have managed to slice a couple of those and that doesn't happen with my usual swing. the swing I put on them usually hooks.

I plan to get a proper iron custom fit in the spring time. I really do think its going to make a big difference to my game!

Two of the things that were identified in my custom fit were that I needed flatter than standard lie angles on my irons, and fairly lightweight steel shafts. Graphite shafts were also tried, but just increased my dispersion with no significant gain of length. Golf with properly fitted clubs feels a whole lot easier and my handicap has come down a couple of shots since I got them.
