Well, here goes.

I was 'custon fitted' for the Cobra irons I got 2 months ago and to be honest they were rotten. Now I have stiff shafts in a set of Cleveland CG4 tour and they were 2nd hand off the shelf. I got from 23 to 9 with any old tat so I am not too convinced by the 'everything need customised approach'.

If you want it done, get it done, if not, don't bother.

Dont really see the point of a high handicapper getting custom fitted as their swing changes so much all the time.

I tried to be custom fitted for my irons but I was told im better of just getting a set of the self as the adjustments I need are so small I would be wasting mt money unless im in line for winning the open.

Think people have gone OTT about custom fitting, however, it does have its advantages for pros and very good golfers who's swing does not change.
As said before you might have the best swing in the world but be naff at putting so you cant compare custom fitting directly to handicap.

I shall write more on the matter later , but now im going to focus my attention to my Fine Champagne Cognac, best not to mix the both!! Good evenings everyone!

What ever the merits of custom fitting may/may not be, I think that most of us to some extent custom fit ourselves by trying out, where ever possible, either demo or mate's clubs to find out what feels best before buying.

This, it has to be said, is one of the disadvantages of being a leftie. Very few demo clubs are available.

But we struggle on......

Unless your 6ft 5 and get a bad back using standard length clubs then i dont believe custom fit is neccessary.

I always bang on about a repeatable swing and when people have one , they MAY see some benefit to custom fitting. ie, better trajectory and a little more distance.

High handicappers take note . . . The higher the loft on the club, the easier it is to hit. Therefore, use 12 or 13 degree drivers and rescue clubs instead of long irons.

Take it from me there is a big gap between a 5 and a 6 handicap

I would have to take you to task on that matey.

I am off of 4 and my wee mate is off of 1. Now there is night and day between us with only 3 shots difference. Another regular golfing buddy of mine plays off of 7 and he can more often that not run me all the way with his fair share of pints won.

3 and below is a different world and I genuinely believe at that level you have that wee bit extra, whether its between the ears or natural I genuinely believe that 3 or below is a level beyond me. Dont get me wrong on my day I feel as though I can get there however the consistancy to sustain it is awesome!

i think that 2 many players think that custom fit is the answer to lowering there h`cap.. well i think that they would be better getting a couple of lessons first .gaining some consistency ,work on there short game -100 yards in is the secret .rather than spending say £300 on a fitted driver ,get ur putter custom fitted and get a putting lesson.that i`ll improve ur scores and it`ll be money well spent i can tell u !!

I want to take this a step further and add that when AG fitted me the other week they also looked at things like grip size. Rather a forgotten requirement but an important one none the less.

As the grip is the only contact we have with the club it is important it fits correctly. A grip that is too thin or too fat will lead to incorrect hand action which can exagerate poor shots into very bad ones (fades intt slices and draws into hooks).

I'm not advocating that getting a correct grip size is alll that needs to be done. I think custom fitting for anyone who has a semblance of a repeatable swing can be beneficial.

One area people have missed are the senior golfers either on here or at your clubs. They may have been struggling with old shaft technology but are the "anti custom fit" brigade really going to disagree that a little tweaking of their shafts into something more matching their slower swing speeds is not going to help keep them straighter and maybe give them a few yards back.

Are you going to tell me most of these golfers who have played in most cases for 20+ years are not going to have a repeatable action (they are the worst opponents to get drawn against in knock-outs. Give me a low handicapper any day).

In conclusion I advocate the benefits of custom fitting not because AG managed to sell me a set of shiny new X20's but because I think it presents an opportunity to open up an already difficult game and give mere mortals just looking for some R&R and a sport they enjoy a chance to play it just that bit better.

If I may be allowed to speak ...from a high handicapper view point
I chose some irons and Mr B treated me to the custom fit. I was a bit sceptical and I don't think there was a great deal of adjustment, but hey, having all that technical stuff told to you doesn't half increase confidence in your purchase. You don't ever doubt that you made the right choice - and golf is mostly in the mind!
Stupid? who cares if it has the desired effect!

From what I have seen custom fitting can be very important.
For example I was recently fitted for Mizuno MP 57 irons at a Mizuno national fitting fitting centre.
I am 5 handicap and was fitted with stiff dynamic gold dynalite shafts which gave a spin rate around 4,800rpm.
Our club pro came with me and was also fitted for mp57's.
Although our 6 iron swing speeds were very similar (approx 82 mph)the spin he created with the same shaft was over 7,000 rpm.
Therefore if he had ordered the same shafts his shots would balloon and he would lose significant distance and control

Very well spoken. The confidence one feels standing over a shot knowing its exactly the right club will more often than not produce that nice smooth easy swing that balloons the bar high into the blue sky and lands softly on a pristine velvety green and rolls to a stop inches from the pi for that tap in birdie.

In seriousness if you are not worrying about the equipment and focussing on making a good swing you have to play better

On a lighter note, when you get measured up etc and are playing with teh optimum ball, iron, tee and trousers....then catch it thin, who can you blame?

Ah, Well, thats when the weather, the ground conditions, the greenkeeper, the group in front, the group behind all come into the equation. You've got to be able to blame someone/thing haven't you.

Or

Maybe we're just kidding ourselves we can play this game.

AliB, well said! I hope to be getting new irons and a new putter soon and will get both fitted. It doesn't cost me anything as the fitting is free and as with my driver it will give me confidence in the clubs.
Unfortunately it also means I can only blame the nugget on the end of it!
