ended up with Aldila NV 65 as the best fit. Back to a reg shaft for the first time in a few years. Getting too old for a macho stiff shaft.

But if it works, well... I'll be a happy boy.

Ok, so i take it you have been fitted for your irons, do you think if you had not been fitted your handicap would be higher, i very much doubt it

I can only go on personal experiance. Got fitted for Nike cci forged irons and the differance between them and my old titleist dci 990's, good clubs, that were handed down from my dad was amazing. I reckon I'm 10 yds a club longer and much straighter because, mainly, the shafts I'm now using are much better suited to my swing speed.

Would always recomend fitting, why make a difficult game even harder.

I think that custom fitting is 100% essential to get the best from your game.

There are probably so many people who have totally the wrong equipment because they have simply purchased it off of the shelf.

An older man I know has been using a stiff driver for years, could get no distance, got custom fitted for his 2008 driver and......... success!!!

Remember Divot, it is not just irons that people should get fitted for. Every club in the bag is important, many people in all this forget to get fitted for their putter which I think is essential.

Whoever this well-known coach may be, is an arse in my oppinion. Sorry but thats my oppinion and I strongly feel that he is giving out cr@p advice.

Thank god somebody agrees with me, leave the custom fit to the pros and the very low handicaps, used a set of titleist of the shelf dci for years, got down to a 5 handicap, got caught up in the ping custom fit crap, game went to bits, now using a set of standard callay x18, hope to get handicap back down, in fact i know i will.

I agree that you should get custom fitted.
I too thought it was only for the lower handicappers but I had my new driver fitted.
This was my first club to be fitted and since then I have been more consistant and straighter.

I used to play with a bit of a fade/slice but I am now confident enough to aim straight down the fairway instead of aiming 10 yards left.

divot, my handicap has gone from 4.3 to 3.7 in three comps since I got fitted. So not a whole shot but it won't be long. Also cat 1 you only go down .1 per shot under ss. But if you look at it as a percentage of handicap I think it represents a fair drop.

Well done gasp, thats what i am saying its only a benefit to the better player, custom fit will not make the average golfer better, you can only benefit from custom fitting once you have grooved your swing and by that time you will be a low handicaper.

divot I have to disagree. If a high handicapper is straighter off the tee, straighter with his irons bacuase of fitting then surely this gives him/her a chance to shoot better scores. Have you seen the Max Your Game feature in the Mag? The results are consistantly better.

Having said this I don't think there's any substitute for lessons, and practising your short game will always provide better scoring than help with the long game. So get your putter fitted too.

What if you are the nuts with Driers and Irons but crap at putting custom fitting your irons might bring you form 25 20 bu then your crap at putting. Your not a low handicap yet you still benefit from the fitting!

I thought you would as I had more evidence to prove it right.

Dont be surprised if your ping irons were [****] becasue there fitting is crap as mention X amount of times in previous posts

Custom fit means different things to different people, A bit like argung that a diesel engine is better than a diesel engine, it depends what you started off with.

I have never been fully custom fitted for clubs and happily played of 6 for a few years. Then again, Ive always chosen my clubs based on what I know about my swing, reasonably powerful fast swing calls for slightly firmer than regular shafts, I hit a high ball so usually buy 9 deg and less drivers etc. As I said, to me thats as custom as I need, some other people want more and fair play to them.

Dont really see the point of a high handicapper getting custom fitted as their swing changes so much all the time.

I tried to be custom fitted for my irons but I was told im better of just getting a set of the self as the adjustments I need are so small I would be wasting mt money unless im in line for winning the open.

Think people have gone OTT about custom fitting, however, it does have its advantages for pros and very good golfers who's swing does not change.
