I was speaking to a well known golf coach to-day and he was saying that all this stuff about custom fitting is a load of old crap, he said unless you play to a 3 or less handicap there is no need to get custom fit. I played of a 5 handicap for years with standard clubs, then got caught up in all this custom fit stuff, i now play off 12, what do you think.

Don't agree. With the selection of shafts/head etc available today and the rapid progress of technology I think it's fitting is crucial.

Glad you agree Andy, wont get alot of support on here, how can changing a golf club by one or two degree help you hit the ball better. Most golfers would be better spending there money on lessons rather than thinking custom fit is the answer to better golf.

Cmon mvp think about it, where would you find that club on the shelf, all he said was the average golfer does not need custom fit, the standard iron om the shelf would do for the average golfer, which is 99 out of 100.

There is no average golfer written here! Averages golfers do not play off of 4,5,6,7,8,9 or anything to far apart from 12 to 28

I agree with you stevelockie. I've just been through the process for a new driver. I was surprised at the end result. The difference in shafts alone can make or break you. I was surprised that two similar speced shafts could be so different. Trying to get the optimum lauch angle was proving a bit difficult until I tired what was available rather than try what I thought I needed. A good fitter who is willing to spend time with you is essential. I would have been away home with the wrong club if I'd done it on my own.

How do you get on with the 900s, nice looking clubs if a little chunky on some of them. I take it you noticed the difference between the Stiff shafts and the Regs, more response ?

I'm with divot and andy, very sceptical of the whole thing - it's a marketing gimmick.
Only guy I know who got custom fitted with I5's hits it no differently from before even if he thinks he does and his handicap is also going up!
Said it before the high handicappers bang on about it, the low handicappers know better!
