so had a net 68 today in the medal, ok only one shot under but css also went down 1 shot to 68. Only 4 people came in under nett par out of 32 so how does it go down when the majority are over par nett.

My fault for 3 putting the last but thought I might have got a 0.4 cut as opposed to just making buffer.

stupid, over complicated bloody game!!!!!!

the irons actually went well today and the amount of chances I had for a good score only to duff a chip or miss a good chance with the putter. Must play when poorly more often as an easy 3/4 swing works wonders :p

Depends on how many others made buffer - and how many on the overall comp.

Best to aim for 1 below SSS as your start point imo. That way when CSS goes down it's not a disappointment and anything else is a bonus.

I heard its mainly decided on how the cat 1 players score. Not sure though?

we aint got any!

I know its right as its done via handicapmaster, I guess someone off 24 shooting a nett 65 doesnt help :(

2 common myths.

Cat 1 players only have the same influence on CSS as other players, though can push it up more easily as they don't have much buffer.

And it doesn't matter whether anyone is 1 under SSS or 21 under SSS. It's percentage of players under that counts.

yeah, at least I stopped the rot of 0.1's. Gutted though as didnt have a single 3 putt until the last and needed a 6 or better for sub 90 and got a bloody 7 after a shocking drive :(

Cat 4 players also don't count towards the CSS equation...

we have plenty of them :p

I guess its like the dark arts, some formula that oxford maths phd students would struggle to decipher ;)

How is the Competition Scratch Score calculated?
This is not a straightforward calculation. Broadly speaking, the calculations follow

For Men; Discount all scores returned by category 4 players (handicaps 21 to 28), for Ladies; Discount all scores returned by category 5 players (handicaps 29 to 36)
Calculate the percentage of players who competed in the competition in each of categories 1, 2 and 3 [and 4 for Ladies],
Calculate the percentage of scores returned by the category 1, 2 and 3 [and 4] players which were two over the Standard Scratch Score of the course, or better.
Use the percentages from (2) and (3) to determine the Competition Scratch Score by referring to a table supplied by CONGU for the purpose.

Should be interesting to see what happens tomorrow with my handicap as word on the doors is I have won the monthly medal with a score of 1 over HC but 3 over SSS. Next player is 5 over and 7 over SSS but is a cat 4, next cat 3 is 10 over SSS. What will the computer make of that!

Close, but not quite.

The 'within 2 shots' was recently (2012) amended to 'within <category> shots'

Looks like it will be reductions only.

I always aim for 10 below SSS but it still doesn't make any difference.... maybe 20 would be a better marker

;)

Egad! Golf is a masochistic enough pastime on its own without adding a guarantee of depression from failure by such a huge distance to it!:D

Ah...I just copied and pasted from a site....should've quoted my source really! Still...it's a complicated procedure!

I'm quite lucky at my place as CSS is never a violent swing. It'll never go to 72, and usually sits somewhere around 73 or 74.

CSS, another old favourite.

Hate it when it goes down, happy when it goes up (which it did a lot last year).

Personally I think it should'nt go down so we can all enjoy the good days. But it seems fair to let it go up on bad ones when it is cold, wet and blowing a hooly. It'll be the same for everyone so it hardly matters.

Then why do we need it at all?
